Jane's Story: Chapter 1
Chapter One: This Is Jane
"Alright, everybody. On your mark...Get set...GO!" the P.E. coach hollered. At the word "Go", the students all took off running at top speed. The class was very athletic and everyone was closely matched; with the exception of one, however. There was one girl who soared ahead of the rest.
"Impressive! You ran 100 meters in 8.5 seconds! I've never seen that before!" the coach said enthusiastically.
"Thank you, Coach Ramirez!" she replied, smiling.'I wonder how she'd react if she saw me run at full speed,' she thought to herself.
Her name was Jane. To any human, she would have looked completely normal. She had dark brown hair, fair skin, and strikingly bright, piercing green eyes that seemed to see through anything they were focusing on. Her eyes, despite being striking, were part of her charm.
There was one thing about her that everyone who had ever encountered her wouldn't deny: She was incredibly beautiful.
"Woah! Jane, you're a monster!" a classmate of hers said as he walked up to her.
"Haha, Louie," she laughed, "I guess I am."
What Louie said was true. Jane was just that. She was different. She could run faster, her senses were sharper, and she was much, much stronger than the average person. 'Of course anything that doesn't fit human standards is either an animal or a monster...' she thought.
"Alright class, good work!" Coach Ramirez said, pleased with the results of the 100 meter dash that just took place. "The bell is about to ring, so go and get changed and I'll see you all tomorrow!"
After changing, Jane headed off to her next class: History. She loved History. It was her favorite class of all time. That man had taught her about her clan's history and the history of the humans and as a result, she became extremely interested in the events of the past; for both humans and her clan.
Ever since she was born, Jane, a daughter of the North Clan, was raised among humans even though she was obviously not human. Jane had always wondered why she was raised among human beings and not among her clan members in the North Clan where her existence was rooted. Although she was curious, she was content with her life among the humans, so she never asked that man why. She was aware of the fact that she was scared of what the answer would be, however, she refused to admit it. Fear was like poison to Jane. She despised being scared of anything because she was vulnerable to weakness whenever she was afraid.
'The one thing you can't afford to be is weak, Jane. You must be mentally and physically stronger than everyone.' That was what that man had always told her when she was very little. Jane was raised to be fearless and strong. She wouldn't fall to anyone or anything.
"Hey, Jane!" her best friend Allana came up to her smiling. "How was P.E.?" she continued, "I've started reading that book you lent me, but it's just so wordy that I can barely understand any of it! I'm surprised you were able to read through the whole thing! This is the wo-o-ordiest fiction novel I've ever laid my eyes upon!"
Jane chuckled, "Pfft...your reaction is so funny, Allana! No need to start shouting at me in the hallway this early in the morning!" she said with a cheerful grin now spread across her face.
Allana was one of the only people that Jane felt comfortable enough around to open up to. She felt that most of the people in her school were fake and only talked to her because of her looks. She didn't have an outgoing personality and she hardly ever spoke to any of the other kids in her school, but for some reason, they would swarm her every time they got the chance to. Allana was different, though. She was the quiet type that sat in the back of the classroom looking down at her desk on the first day of school. Nobody took any interest in her and she seemed pretty lonely. Oddly enough, Jane picked her out of the crowd instantly and decided that she would befriend her. After all, Allana was the only one in that classroom that didn't try to bother Jane like the others did.
"Hi," Jane smiled as she walked up to Allana for the first time.
"Oh..hi there," Allana responded, shocked, but glad.
From that day on, the two became best friends. Jane had never intended to make any friends in high school because she was brought up being told constantly by that man that most humans were not trustworthy and that she shouldn't get too close to them or her safety would be in jeopardy.
"Jane, Jane!" Jane heard Allana calling her name all of a sudden.
Jane blinked a few times before shaking her head and responding, "Oh, sorry! What did you say? I was spacing out."
"We've arrived at the classroom, already," she pointed at the room number. "Room 273. Time to wake up and head inside, sleepy!"
After history class, the rest of the day passed by very quickly. Jane went through her last three classes -- Math, Chemistry, and Literature -- in no time. When the final bell rang at the end if her last period class, she blinked and had to wake herself up again. Lately, Jane had been having constant day dreams about a strange woman who looked unusually familiar, yet Jane knew she had never seen her before. Her gorgeous blonde hair hung over her pale shoulders and her dark brown eyes shone with happy excitement. She was looking at Jane with a radiant, loving smile spread across her face. Suddenly, her hair turned from blonde to charcoal black and her welcoming brown eyes turned red and menacing. She started to scream and in a flash, she turned to ashes; dead in a second.
Jane was haunted by that very nightmare almost everyday and it started occurring more and more. On her way home, Jane couldn't help but wonder, 'What could it possibly mean? I'm getting this dream for a reason."
Every time she told that man about it, his face would turn a frighteningly sickly pale and he would respond with the same words every time, 'It'll go away soon. So, what do you want for dinner tonight?'
Jane couldn't help but feel that the answer to her question was at hand.
* * * His red, unforgiving eyes looked down into the cold, heartless eyes of his strong, proud son.
"Go, Raven. You've been trained all your life for this mission. Remember what's at stake." Chief Amaury's chilling voice boomed.
"Yes, father," Raven smiled cruelly, "you won't be disappointed."
