The world was dark and hazy before my eyes. All I could see were vague shapes and wisps of color as they wiped by in a flurry. My mind turned sluggishly as I tried repeatedly to focus on something, anything. Anything that would help pull me back to reality. I don’t know when I stopped falling but I know I did. The wind no longer whipped past, tearing at my face and hair as it whispered of my demise instead it rustled tickled my cheek as it brushed past, changing direction as I seemed to meander through the sky. Slowly I run my hands along my new perch, the surface was rough beneath my fingers and I scooted forward, feeling around curiously. “Am I dead?” I asked myself as my fingers contacted something soft like fur, my voice trembling and weak. “No young one. You are alive, now stop you’re squirming before you fall” I jumped as the booming voice sounded in my head and I almost toppled over but my savior wrapped something around me to keep me in place. I blinked several times, slowly my vision clearing and I had to squint my eyes. Everything looked so bright now as I looked from my hands to the obsidian beyond it. The ground fell nearly twenty feet below and as I followed the scaly line with my eyes I gasped as a hooded head appeared at the front. It was looking at me, its beady eyes somehow filled with concern. I’d never seen a cobra before but I never expected them to be so big. He was huge like a fallen tree, his hood looked big enough to double as a large umbrella and his fangs could easily slice though flesh and bone but he wasn’t menacing at all. He just looked at me, his tail curled around my waist to keep me still as he flapped his powerful wings. Facing forward once more he slithered through the sky with me on his back. I was too shocked to say anything so we traveled in silence for a while. Pulling my eyes away from the winged serpent I realized that I didn’t know where we were. Panic flared up in my mind and the cobra tightened his grip on me “stop squirming young one. You are safe now” I jumped as the same deep voice sounded in my head and looked up at the snake, he looked back and nodded as though to say “yes that is me”. Eyes wide I stared at him for a few minutes before hesitating and speaking, unsure as of whether I was truly talking to a snake or if I’d just bumped my head harder then I’d thought. “w-who are you?” A gentle laugh echoed through my mind. “I have no name that you would know but in old times I was called Quetzalcoatl ‘feathered serpent’” I looked at him and tried to pronounce his name and failing horribly. “Qwatazalcatle?” His amused laughter made me feel ridiculous for pronouncing it wrong. “Not quite young one. Que-t-zal-coat-le” I tried it again “Qwatzalcotl? ...how about Zal for short?” he smiled at me and nodded “Zal? That sounds quite nice. What may I call you youngling?” “Lin, my name is Lin” “that’s easy enough. So what were you doing tangoing with the feathered ones?” For a moment I was confused then I remembered the angels and a shook my head, a shiver running down my spine. “The angels? …they kidnapped me” “kidnapped? Oh my, I’ve never heard of them stealing children from the human realm before.” I shifted uncomfortably “I wasn’t actually in the human realm…” he looked at me, confusion clouding his copper colored eyes. “you mean you were already here?” I nodded “yes. I’ve been living with the devil” “oh my, dear Lin don’t you know that that’s forbidden?” I nod once more and feel kind of foolish for being scolded like a child by Zal. “I know. I only learned that recently though and now I have to find my way back to the devil but I don’t know where I am anymore” Tears stung my eyes and I tried to hold them in, tired of being so weak. Zal must have felt my body shake or heard my pathetic whimper for he hugged me comfortingly with his coils. “Hush, hush my dear. I’ll help you find him” looking back up to him I gave a week smile. “Really?” “I went through all the trouble of rescuing you so why not make sure your safely home.” I hugged his coils and thanked him a thousand times over and he just laughed and said nothing.
