A Monochrome World
There was a time where there was no color. If you watch any old film or look at old pictures, they are always in black-and-white. If you ask any older person, it's likely they will lie and change the topic. I can assure you, however, that our planet was entirely different during this time. The world was unbearably bland and simple, with objects never varying in hue. In the early 1800's, there lived a young artist named Ruth. She was a very creative girl who always got lost into her artwork. One day the girl fell asleep while doodling and had a dream about a futuristic world blasting full of color. She was standing on some naturally green grass with a calming sky of blue above her head. The bright yellow flowers seemed much more cheerful then the pale grey ones that she grew up with. Stores all had signs with warm colors, mostly dazzling red, and they stood out like light in a dark room. The people wandering around had diverse hair colors, different eye colors, and surprisingly varying fashion senses as well. Ruth looked like a child at Disneyland, as her brain was hardly able to absorb her surroundings. She wanted nothing more then to spend the rest of her days in that vibrant paradise. It was there that her artwork could blossom fully.
When she awoke from her glorious dream, she was determined to tell the world of her vision. She quickly headed outside and pushed past the crowds of monochrome people. Eventually she spotted the stage in the middle of the town, with a little staircase off the side. She hurried onto it and gripped the microphone, trying to get everyone's attention,
"People, everywhere! Please listen to me!" The people in the town did eventually stop, giving her bizarre views and staring at her questionably. She continued to let the words escape, "I had a dream about the future. It was a dream that showed us the beauty of life. Everything stood out so amazingly. People were a lot less plain looking, and nothing blended into each other. We are used to our typical shades of black and white. The world that I saw, however, was much different then any of that. The world I saw was--" Ruth paused for a moment when she drew up a dreadful conclusion. How in the world would she be able to describe colors? She knew she may be able to describe the feelings they gave her, or how many shades there was, but nobody would quite grasp it unless they saw it for themselves. Before she could make another move, she noticed something else happening. At first people had confused expressions, but this confusion slowly turned to anger. She then began to hear an array of threats and insults, calling her things like insane and wrong. Having witnessed it herself, Ruth would've told anyone a thousand times about how wonderful it all was, but not a single person had the right mind to believe her. Even her loving family, who was standing in that crowd, looked away with shame.
"This girl has been spending way too much time drawing!"
"Someone should lock her away for good!"
"What are you wasting our time for!? This is nonsense!"
"She's up to no good! I bet she's planning to make fools out of us!"
The townspeople grew so angry with Ruth that soon they were throwing bottles at her and forming into a vicious mob. Ruth ducked to avoid the attacks, and then quickly rushed into the forest as fast as her little legs could carry her. Everything was back to normal the very next day, and the girl was never seen again. Lots of time passed before the middle of the 1900's. An man invented color for the world around this time by putting a pigment gas into the atmosphere. As the particles fell from the sky, color sunk into everything, creating the world we know today. The black-and-white memory of a sad little artist was never spoken of. For most people, it was entirely forgotten about. She was never able to blossom in our vibrant world, but instead, she became lost in a monochrome past.
