Despite what people believe the review count isn’t a reliable way to know if a story is good or not. I just read a story that contain 168 reviews and I was expecting it to be very good, but I noticed that while I was reading it, it was filled with mistakes. So that had me thinking that maybe, I should have checked the reviews first to make sure it was a good.
However, even these so called “reviews” weren’t reliable either. Each and every one of them was just praises. I checked, hoping that there was at least one person who was sensible enough to leave an honest review. To leave constructive criticism, but nope, there was nothing. It was just ridiculous. It made me wonder if I and those people who left the reviews were reading the same story!
The sad thing also was that those review weren’t even those simple and repetitive kind, such as “love the story” and “update soon”. They were actually in detail about what they liked about it. I don’t mean to sound like the author of the story deserves negative reviews, but come on readers/reviewers what happen to a well-balance review?
Lesson of the day: For people just getting into the fan fiction world. The review count can’t be trusted. Incredible stories (amazing plot, well written characters, grammar, etc.) could have 5 or less reviews. While horrible stories could have 20 or more reviews. I don’t know for sure why great stories are sometimes neglected, but there’s many reasons for it.
So remember, it’s not the quantity of reviews that matter, but the the quality of the story. Reviews for well-written stories should reflect that quality, meaning they should be balance and be helpful. Not just for the writer but for other readers who want to know if it’s worth reading the story or not. Not everyone checks out the story first, instead some like to check out the reviews for it.
