Hurricane Sandy was a tropical cyclone that headed to the Northeastern part of the United States. It was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, with winds spanning 1,100 miles. Many believed that it would be similar to Hurricane Irene or a little worst then it. Many people prepare themselves just to be safe but no one expected it to be a lot worst than expected.
On Monday, October 29, 2012 the weather was certainly storming badly. But it seem the same to me when Hurricane Irene happen. With Irene the only thing that happen was that after it finished, water was leaking into the building from the roof. It wasn’t anything too bad, just puddles and nothing too serious. All the roof needed was some patching up. The only concern I and my parents had was that maybe Sandy will be stronger and undo the work we did on the roof. So we kept on eye on the building throughout the storm.
I figured that was the only bad thing that would happen, beside a possible power outage. Now, as it got closer to night the lights, the television and my internet kept flickering in and out. With Hurricane Irene that didn’t happen so my concern grew. I was on Facebook, keeping updated with my friends and I was not surprise to see them update their status with how they lost their power. I knew that it was only a matter of time that I would be joining them. Though I kept hoping that maybe I’ll be one of the lucky few that still manage to make it through Sandy without a lost of power.
Of course, I lost power before I could prepare myself for when it would happen. I already had the flashlights and candles laid out. I wasn’t worry about that part but what came after it. I knew that once the electricity was out I would be really bored. I had hope to charge my DS, mp3 and laptop before it went out but I was too late. I only manage to charge my laptop halfway (the batteries were being wonky – they should have been fully charge since it was plugged in earlier).
Before I lost power, my mother was telling me that towards the night, Sandy was getting stronger because she was getting closer to land. It was at 7:34 pm that the electricity went out and the emergency lights came on (those only last for an hour or two before going out). There wasn’t much to do but at least it happen towards that night. Everyone in my neighborhood grab their flashlights, it was pitch black and it wasn’t hard to see people’s flashlights shining through their windows. All we could do was stay up for a little while and then go to bed early.
On the next day, Tuesday I was reluctant to wake up and get out of my bed. It wasn’t raining, or windy just cloudy. I knew that the electricity was still out and it’ll be a while until it comes back on. When I got out of my bed, my mom updated me on the situation. Hurricane Sandy stopped around 7:00 am. The electricity is still out, people in the neighborhood have been inspecting their cars and houses for any damages. Some people went to the closest supermarket to get some supplies but everything is pretty much closed. Pathmark was open because they have a generator but nearly all the supplies they did have is gone.
The only way people in my neighborhood were able to keep update was to listen to a battery-powered radio. We learn that 1.4 million in NJ are without power (at least that’s what I last heard on the radio). That many areas have a lot of damages from falling trees, branches, flooding and whatnot. Many will be without power for a while and it will depend on what the cause is. So some people will be without power to 4 – 10 days.
There’s not much I can do besides listen to the radio and keep update on the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. It’s boring. It’s even more boring when it closer to night because candles and flashlights don’t give the best lighting. So again, going to bed early is the best thing to do in times like theses.
It’s Halloween, the last day of the month. I’m so happy that electricity is back on, but that is all that’s on. Television, internet and phone lines are still down. Not just for me but for everyone in my area too. It’s pretty frustrating. If there was an emergency I wouldn’t be able to call for help (and no, I nor my parents have cellphones). And again, I don’t have any way to keep in contact with family members and friends to see if they’re okay or whatnot.
Hurricane Sandy definitely outdone Hurricane Irene. I feel for the people who are suffering much worst.
It’s now Thursday, November 1st. It’s pretty damn cold. There’s nothing new. The internet, cable and phone are still out. My mom talked to one of the neighbors that’s a couple of houses up the street. The neighbor was saying how she’s frustrated with the lack of TV, internet and phone. She had to use her cell to call the company for information of when it’ll be back up. She hasn’t heard anything from them. I don’t even know if they are aware that it’s not working for everyone. So it’s pretty much a waiting game.
My mom and her were talking about the lack of service and that they better not charge us for the days, possibly week(s) of not having it. It’s just wouldn’t be fair for customers to be paying for the days that their service hasn’t been on. If only there was something about it mention in the news (be it on the radio, TV or something) to let people be aware of the situation and what’s being done about it. After all, it shouldn’t be the customers responsibility to call them to come fix it. How can the customers do so when the phone isn’t working?! So yeah, we hope that they’ll going door-to-door (or neighborhood to neighborhood) with their customers and whatnot and fixing the system or whatever it is that needs to be fix.
In the mean time, I’ve been watching movies and working a little on some of my stories. Though I’m not in the mood to be working on them. So I decided to type this up. When Sandy started I wanted to keep tabs of what was happening and I’ve been scribbling down whatever seem irrelevant. As of now, I finished typing this up. When the internet comes back on for me you’ll know because on that same day I’ll post this up. The question though, is how long will it take before I can do so?
