Dying to Be Alive : Chapter One
A dog barked at the woman in the shaded corner. "What are you barking at, Jack?" A child called. The girl came in, sliding across the wooden floor because of her socks. She knelt down, petting the dog. "What is it?" She asked. She looked up, seeing the woman and had wide eyes. She screamed for her mother. A grin grew across the woman's face as she stepped out of the shadow. "Don't worry, darling. I'm here to protect you." Scarlett said, looking up, reveling her face as her her dress swayed behind her. She walked over to the girl and her dog, bending over to pet him. His tail wagged and he licked her face as soon as she got close enough. "What is your name, child?" She asked, standing straight, hands together in front of her. "E-Elenore...Elenore Cross." The girl replied. Her mother came in, sighing deeply. She looked over. "What is it, El?" She asked. She looked right towards Scarlett. She didn't seem to notice her. It was as if she couldn't see her at all. Elenore looked to Scarlett and then to her mother. "Nevermind...I thought I saw a spider." She quietly mumbled, looking back to Scarlett. She smiled, giggling quietly. "But...you absolutely love spiders, sweet heart! Why would you scream because of one?" Her mother asked, arms crossed. Elenore thought about it for a moment. "I thought I saw...a pink kitten." She said. Her mother started to laugh. "You sure are an odd child, aren't you?" She said, smiling. She then walked out of the room. Elenore watched her mother til she could hear her heels on the steps. She looked back to Scarlett, smiling brightly. "What are you? You're so beautiful!" She said, giggling softly. Scarlett smiled. "Thank you, darling. So are you." She put a hand on top of Elenore's head, stroking her light brown hair. "You are very beautiful. I'm surprised a human girl who is only thirteen is already into the dark fashions." She said, noticing her clothes. A black long sleeve shirt with frilled sleeves and a white frilly skirt. Elenore smiled, spinning around for her. "I wish mother would agree to my fashion." She said, stopping. She sighed. "She's always so...ugh." She groaned. "Girl like?" Scarlett asked. "I understand. My mother was a seductive type. A typical Demon female." She explained. "Though, I've been committed for six years." She told Elenore. She begun speaking again before she could get a word in. "And, he sure is a handsome one. Not only that, he is as sweet as blood to a bloodsucker." She said, putting a hand on her cheek, eyes closed and sighing in content. "You're...a Demon?" Elenore asked. "I thought people got guardian Angels?" She said as though it were a question. Scarlett opened her eyes, scowling at her. "Demons can be guardians, too!" She pouted. Elenore put both of her hands out. "Okay, okay." She said, smiling softly. "Well...um...we should probably go somewhere more private so I don't get sent to a therapist." She mumbled. Scarlett nodded, taking her hands. "Just hold on, dear." She said, giving a reassuring smile. Elenore watching as the room descended into black. She looked over, still able to see the woman who claims to be her guardian. Her eyes widened as they were now in a ballroom. There were many people dancing. They all wore masks. Except for the woman and a man in the back. He stood against the wall, seeming to be waiting on someone. Scarlett let go of Elenore's hand and moved towards the man. She reached up, kissing him. Elenore quickly tried to make her way past the dancing couples. She reached the unmasked couple, standing beside them. "I'm Scarlett. This is Despair." Scarlett said, smiling as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Despair grinned at the girl, chuckling. Elenore waved. "H-hi." She said, being a tad bit shy now, Scarlett giggling. "No need to be shy. This is my husband." She said, reaching up again for another kiss. "How is the new body?" She asked when they were done. "Ah. Works quite fine, actually." Despair told her, smiling. Elenore stood there, watching the couple. She smiled. She wondered if her mother knew she was even gone or cared at all. She closed her eyes, sliding down the wall and sitting. She could hear Scarlett move. She opened her eyes, seeing she had gone to a table with masks cluttered on it. Despair sat on the floor with Elenore, wrists resting on his knees. "Such a beautiful thing, isn't she?" He said, staring off into space, but obviously talking about Scarlett. Elenore smiled again as Scarlett came back with a mask that was made to like a skull. She bent over, putting it on Elenore. "You look even more beautiful now, dear." She kissed Elenore's forehead, smiling.
