Elven runes 4 Keme (kuh-may) is the rune representing the basic element Earth and is a powerful and forceful influence. When Keme appears focus on the identity of the Self. What your five senses tell you is of vital importance to resolving the situation you face. It is necessary that you correctly interpret how the physical world is acting upon you to determine which of your five senses are facing the challenge (do not assume it is only one). Only then will you know which part of your true Self requires nurturing before a successful result can be achieved. The test you face is a direct challenge to your identity. How you interpret the situation, allow a correct course of action to evolve, and ultimately implement the solution, will reveal the tangible elements that define who you are at this time, in this place. Take the time to gather the power and energy you need to address the situation correctly, nurture yourself and the environment so the situation can evolve, then stand firmly in the place you have chosen to take up the challenge. It will be your patience and steadfastness that will provide you with the power to overcome the challenge and reveal the correct path.
When Keme (kuh-may) appears in reversal it indicates that some part of the physical world is not in balance. What you sense (feel, taste, smell, see, or hear) is of vital importance to the challenge you face. Paying attention to the physical clues and cues that surround you, will provide the knowledge from which a solution will be derived. Something tangible (physical) lies at the heart of the matter, and you will need to nurture the situation and possibly provide the sustenance necessary for the situation to evolve. Be patient and allow for the time required to evolve the situation into what it can become rather than trying to change it into something you would like it to be. Providing balance to the environment will reveal the correct path. ---- Casta (kah-stah) is the royal Earth rune representing the energies of the Caregiver. When Casta appears focus on the basic necessities in life to find the correct path. The triangle that symbolizes Casta represents the basic building block of the Self. Described in different ways over time, the three sides have often been referred to as mind, body, and soul. The Caregiver is focused on nurturing these most basic elements of the Self, working always to keep them in balance, and properly nourished. Like the Earth, Casta provides sustenance to the Self by providing food, water, and warmth: the most basic of needs. Even in ancient times it was understood that until an individual’s most basic needs in life were met pursuing higher level endeavors would not be possible or fruitful. This is the role of Caregiver, to provide the most fundamental resources to the Self. It is not uncommon for those who understand the powers of the Caregiver to make comparisons of this energy to the love of a mother - the idealized caregiver. This is why the Caregiver is considered a selfless power, one that will sacrifice itself in order to ensure the survival of those being cared for. The Caregiver is generous, sometimes enabling, often an altruist, willing and able to place it’s own security in peril to ensure the safety of another. The Caregiver is quick to sacrifice, quick to forgive, slow to anger, and eager to serve. When in the presence of the Caregiver the Self feels taken care of, loved, cherished, accepted, and completely secure in the world because one will never want when the Caretaker is nearby. To find the correct path be certain you have what is necessary to make the journey. The appearance of Casta can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Caregiver has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the resources they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to provide resources for your efforts, encourage your efforts, or be challenging your motivation to move forward by satisfying your needs here. The appearance of Casta can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Caregiver, soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively.
When Casta (kah-stah) appears in reversal it is often an indication that the most basic resources required to challenge an existing situation are not currently in your possession, but need to be. Focus on gathering the basic resources necessary to begin traveling down the next path. One (or more) of those resources have not yet been accumulated in quantities sufficient to provide an effective result. Attempt to understand what is lacking in either material needs, physical abilities, or spiritual satisfaction with the Self and supply that need before moving forward. Perhaps you are not the person who needs nurturing – it is someone (or something) else in the environment that requires the power of the Caregiver in order to succeed. The role of the Caregiver needs to be fulfilled before one can journey down the path. The appearance of a reversed Casta can also mean that a person possessing qualities contrary to that of the Caregiver has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the resources they consume (or have already consumed) in the environment as they may be here to deplete the resources required for a successful completion of your efforts, to discourage your efforts, or be motivating you to accumulate more resources before moving forward. The appearance of a reversed Casta can also be a powerful suggestion that you are not currently in possession of the power of the Caregiver, but need to be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. ---- Erru (ee-roo) is the royal Earth rune representing the energies of the Creator. When Erru appears focus on creativity to find the correct path. The unusual design that symbolizes Erru represents the creative powers of the Self that lie just below surface of our experience in the known world. The Creator provides the energy and introspection necessary to envision things in a new way or from a alternative perspective. Like the Earth, which provides a dazzling array of alternatives to most any physical form, the Self has the ability to nurture the world as it is and prepare for what it can become. The powers of the Creator provides us with the ability to produce representations of the real or develop tangible visions of what is not real…the ability to see things as they could, or should be. Imagination is one of the most powerful energies of the Creator, since it provides the Self with the tool to take all of the elements the Earth provides and re-perceive them. Imagination is the source of ingenuity, problem solving, and critical thinking, and through imagination the Self can turn the tangible, known world, into the abstract world of the mind and dreams. It is through the slow evolution of thought and learning that suddenly the creative energies of the Self are unleashed. Though this seems counter to the typical pace of evolution, think of the moment of discovery (brought on by finally putting all of the pieces together), the sudden appearance of the sprout (after the nurturing of the seed beneath the soil), the sudden burst of rain (after clouds have accumulated). Further, think of the unconnected brushstrokes on the canvas that suddenly emerge as a painting with substance and coordinated form, or the unshaped wood that, at some point, becomes a recognizable tool or image in the form of a carving. In each of these examples, it is from the energies of the Earth, or through the imaginings of the Self, that something yet to be is first conceived. Like all things related to the Earth, nurturing and freedom lie at the core of evolving the world. Erru, the Creator, provides the freedom and tools for each of us to evolve the world, or ourselves. The correct path does not yet exist, it must be created. The appearance of Erru can also mean that a person possessing the qualities of the Creator has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the creativity they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to free you of the restraints blocking your creative abilities, to help you rethink your efforts, or be challenging your willingness to imagine things differently. The appearance of Erru can also be a powerful suggestion that you are currently in possession of the power of the Creator, or soon will be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively.
When Erru appears in reversal it is often an indication that the imaginative energies required to challenge the existing situation are not currently in your possession, but need to be. Focus less on what is and more on what could be. Do this without judgment, and without the context of the current situation clouding your vision of what could be before you’ve even imagined it anew. To be creative requires the ability to dream, to visualize that which does not yet exist, you must free yourself to pursue the challenge using these energies and not those that have proven successful in the past, but seem now to no longer work. Look within and without for inspiration, if you look with fully open eyes (or any of your other senses) the environment will provide you with what you need to proceed. The correct path is not a worn path. The appearance of a reversed Erru can also mean that a person possessing qualities contrary to that of the Creator has entered your life, or is about to, in direct association with the challenge or issue you face. If such a person appears, pay attention to the habits they bring (or have already brought) to the situation as they may be here to block your creative thoughts, discourage new perspectives, or pointing you to that which needs to be re-imagined. The appearance of a reversed Erru can also be a powerful suggestion that you are not currently in possession of the power of the Creator, but need to be, or that embodying that energy is necessary to proceed effectively. ---- Ara (ah-ra) is the royal Earth rune representing the energies of the King. When Ara appears focus on the energies of the servant ruler to find the correct path. The four-pointed design that symbolizes Ara represents the jewel of the King’s crown or ring, emitting energies from within and bathing the world in its glow. The King has the power and energy to oversee the world and protect it from those powers that would seek to tarnish its beauty. The King, as an unquestioned authority, personifies a commitment to the larger good, eagerly accepting the responsibilities of taking care of the entire kingdom and not just the Self. The jewel of the King shines wherever the abuse of power has been vanquished, where the desire to dominate the world, or others, has been defeated. The example the King sets encourages others to assume responsibility for others, to encourage the endeavors of others, to focus the power of the Self on something other than the Self. The servant ruler welcomes ideas, encourages debate, and listens to the world to know what is right and just. This is no easy task and obtaining the power of the King comes with the perils of temptation ever near, ever pulling the King to that which is unworthy of the shine he must emit to the world. The correct path is the one that serves all. ---- Naia (nai-ah) is the symbolic rune representing a spear. The spear points in one direction, with purpose, and intention. When Naia appears it indicates that you are moving in a good direction, that your course is sound and resolute. It is a sign of confidence, or should be, regarding how you are proceeding on the journey at this time and place. Do not question the path you’ve chosen. When Naia appears it can also mean that the challenge you face requires you to take the direct route to find a satisfactory solution to the challenge, that you need to avoid the perils of becoming unfocused and wandering off the path. Your actions at this time should be straightforward, focused, and unbending. Likewise, if you are being presented with a challenge, that challenge is not being cloaked or masked, but is exactly what it appears to be. Do not make the mistake of trying to develop some kind of sophisticated interpretation of the situation, it lies naked in front of you, fully exposed for what it is. The correct path is the direct path.
Naia (nai-ah) is the symbolic rune representing a spear. The spear points in one direction, with purpose, and intention. When Naia appears in reverse it indicates that your path is being challenged, that the way forward requires you to address resistance. That resistance may manifest in any earthly form. Study the environment because something within it is in direct confrontation with how you are trying to proceed. When Naia appears in reverse, pay special attention to the shape of the resistance. Are someone’s words filling you with doubt? Is the environment sapping your energy? Are you being presented with alternative paths than the one you are on? Something is raising questions in your mind, something is challenging your path, asking you to take another route, a detour. Consider the source, the challenge it presents is likely direct but lacking substance. Your path is not blocked, it just feels blocked…do not waver. Do not doubt the path, it leads in the right direction. ---- Lowa (low-ah) is the symbolic rune representing growth. Growth is the true evolution of the person, the environment, the situation. When Lowa appears you are likely in a good place and evolving the physical Self. The path you have chosen is teaching you important things, things that will transform your physical body, or have already begun to. Soak in the environment and allow the energy around you to act upon you. Pay attention to how the current path is affecting you physically for therein lies a transformation. You are becoming stronger, more alert, or more capable as the result of walking the current path. The challenge of Lowa is to allow your body to accept the environment’s impact upon it, to not hinder the power being projected on to you. Revel in your newfound abilities and consider how they can help you now, and in the future. Walk the path slowly, it is making you stronger.
Lowa (loh-ah) is the symbolic rune representing growth. Growth is the true evolution of the person, the environment, the situation. When Lowa appears in reverse it is an indication the physical environment is evolving the inner Self. You may find that your thinking is changing, that your ability to interact with the environment has taken on a new perspective. Your thoughts are likely quiet, reflective, and peaceful because the environment is feeding your spirit, passing power and energy to the Self. When Lowa appears in reverse, you are challenged to allow the environment to alter and transform how you present the Self to the world, or how the world presents itself to you. It is all good and you must take care not to block that being offered you from entering your being. When the energies of Lowa have completed their evolution you will be changed, and that change will help you on the journey ahead. Walk the path slowly, there is much to consider. ---- Berlo (bare-low) is the symbolic rune representing protection. When Berlo appears the challenge you face is real, but the environment is providing you with protection. Surrounding you are energies that will shield you as you pass through this part of the journey, so do not abandon those things that seem to provide strength and comfort to the Self. And do not take the protection of Berlo for granted, or allow yourself to be emboldened by the sense of safety you might feel. That Berlo appears at all suggests that you need protection in the current situation, and the environment has provided that protection for you. But no one can be protected from everything, and the path Berlo has opened for you may be quite fragile and narrow, only sturdy enough to allow you passage, nothing more. Caution should not be considered a weakness in this time and place. If the path forward appears treacherous, and the side road safe…take the side road because you will not find protection on the treacherous road. Now is not the time to confront a situation that can be avoided, but a time to move forward, finding a better time and place to address the issue. Pay special attention to those things in the environment that seem to be providing you with strength, they have been presented to you for your benefit now and in the future. You may need these things again, on another road, in another place, when you security is not so certainly provided for. The correct path is the safe path. ---- Anon (ah-nahn) is the symbolic rune representing time. Time is the ever present, ever moving, ever challenging element of our lives. When Anon appears, the key to solving the challenge you face lies in the timing of the solution, and your actions. Just as you must sometimes find a place of power, sometimes you must also find a time of power before you confront a situation. Depending upon the situation, the timing of your actions may need to be impeccable, swift, or carried out over a series of events. Context is a key consideration here, especially the context of the physical environment. Take in your surroundings, be aware of how you are influencing the environment, or how the environment is influencing the situation. Therein lies the key to timing your actions. The challenge of Anon is to allow the environment to evolve to its proper place before you proceed. This can mean simply waiting for circumstances to become favorable, but more likely, your intentional manipulation of the environment is in order. Consider carefully the timing of your actions because that, above all else, will be the primary determiner of your success, or failure. Time is not a path, but a tool to be used to find the path. ---- Barandi (bar-ahn-dee) is the life rune representing the companion. The companion is the trusted friend, the wise advisor, possibly the mentor in our lives. Not to be confused with the Other who is associated with the Lover (though they may be one in the same), the Companion is our guide, our mirror, the person to whom we can always turn to for help and assistance on many of the paths we take in life. Likewise, the Companion can always turn to us for the same. The bond of the Self and the Companion is sometimes the strongest one we form in life, one that brings strength and power to both of you. When Barandi appears, the challenge you face should not be addressed alone, but in alliance with the Companion. The Companion helps us clarify our thoughts and plays devil’s advocate to our solutions, providing us with the unfiltered truth we must sometimes have pointed out to us in order to really see the truth. The Companion is a source of strength to us on the journey and never too far away to hear our call. Call on the Companion now, you need the wisdom and energy they will bring to the situation. When Barandi appears it is not unusual for the Companion to suddenly appear in your thoughts, through some form of communication, or at your door. The Companion is prepared and waiting for you on the correct path. ---- Knoss (naus) is the life rune representing the family. The family is our core support in life, the entity that provides us with strength, a sense of belonging, providing us with unconditional love. When Knos appears, draw on the strength of the family to proceed. This does not mean (though it could) that you must bring the family directly into the situation, but that you bring the collective strength of the family to the situation. And Knos does not necessarily represent the family of our birth but may be drawing attention to an alliance of people within our life and their collective strengths. However, you interpret the family in regard to the situation you face, it is the idea of the ‘collective’ that must be foremost in your thoughts. Families provide the Self with so many energies that having one to draw from is a powerful force in life. When Knos appears is suggests that this kind of strength and power is required, or must be developed in order to proceed. If the family already exists, rely on its strengths, if it must be developed nurture it with care so it can evolve as a source of strength for you to draw on. Likewise, find joy in your role within a family and be ever ready to allow others to draw on your strengths when they travel the paths of life. On rare occasions, the appearance of Knos will suggest disruption in the family. If this occurs, do not ignore the token because the loss of the family is a devastating turn on the path. The correct path is taken with others.
