It’s a given fact that you’ll be running and doing a lot of walking in a zombie apocalypse. So hopefully you already put a great deal of thought into the shoes that you’ll be wearing. I’m not going into what shoes are good to wear, instead I want to point out that shoes are something that other survivors will be after.
A good example is from The Last of Us, a video game about a post-apocalyptic United States. A mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus ravaged the world causing those infected to become zombie-like creatures. In the game, you not only dealt with the infected but the hostile humans too, such as bandits and cannibals. This game does an excellent job in dictating how survivors scavenge for useful items, especially shoes.
In a particular scene the main characters come across a camp of hostile survivors who prey on other survivors. They found a room that was filled with shoes. It not only showed how many fell prey to these hostile survivors but that shoes were valuable. Why? Because shoes don’t last forever. The only way to get around is by foot. Most shoes don’t last long, especially when you’re walking or running a lot because they get worn out quickly.
It’s important to wear shoes that are comfortable, good for running and hopefully known to last a long while. If they don’t last it’s important to stock up on them and have another pair on hand. You’re going to need a lot of shoes to last for long term survival.
Shoes that are inappropriate will cause your feet to blister, which can cause problems. You’re going to be constantly on your feet and if left untreated they can become infected. And if you don’t give them enough time to heal you’ll be constantly in pain, which can be a hindrance when you need to be on the move.
So, for those doomsday preppers you definitely want to think about stocking up on good shoes. Maybe even look into how to make your own footwear when your supplies of shoes comes to an end.
