Journey Into the Mundane
This is were I rant about stuff.
Trophy or Crazy Ex?
Clint was lurking in the rafters looking down on his crush. She had been sitting in the library reading for the past half hour but now she was on the move. As she walked Clint shadowed her from above. She walked down endless hallways, moving past innumerable doors until she finally stopped in front of one. She took a deep breath and opened the door. As she stepped in Clint dropped down from the rafters.

“You come here a lot.” He casually mentioned as he walked through the door behind her.

“There’s something here that I like.” She said with a mercurial smile.

“Something you like? This is a lab, what could you see here that you would like?”

“Not really something.” She lowered her voice. “I’m not really comfortable talking about it.” She turned around to face Clint. “Is there something you needed me for?”

“No, I just wanted to talk to you.” He responded.

“About what?” She asked.

“Who are you here to see?” Clint stared into her eyes.

“It’s rude to answer someone’s question with another question.” She said with a smile.

“It’s a good question.” He countered.

“Fine.” She relented. “I’m here to see Bruce but it doesn’t look like he’s around.”

Clint looked at the ground as he spoke. “He actually moved to another lab to avoid you.”

“Liar!” She hissed.

“I’m telling the truth Isabel. He said you were a crazy ex.”

“When did he say that?” She asked, the hurt evident in her eyes.

“They asked me to help move some of their lab equipment, our conversation lead to why the change in locations and Bruce talked about how you were a stalker.” He admitted.

“Where are they now?” She asked, her voice rising.

“Isabel, don’t waste your time—“ He started but Isabel cut him off.

“I’ll find him myself!” She snapped as she pushed past him and walked out the door. He stayed behind and watched her walk away.

Around eleven at night Clint found Isabel in the kitchen eating chocolate frosting. He slid onto a chair next to her. They both sat in silence, neither wanted to be the first to talk.

After several minutes Clint spoke. “He’s wrong. You aren’t a crazy ex. I think you’re the opposite, you’re like a trophy.”

Isabel turned and glared at him.

“You’re like a perfect girl. You’re athletic—“

“I can barely run a mile or do more than twenty pushups.” She groaned.

“You’re so nice even though you work as an interrogator.” He continued.

“Not really an interrogator if I literally rip the information right out of their brains.” She interrupted.

“You look beautiful in every sense of the word.”

“My skin is a pinkish color, I have a flat chest, a burn on my left arm, and a slowly fading scar on my cheek and lip. How is any of that beautiful? There was only one man that loved me. We were a great couple. He was so gentle and caring and smart and he made me feel pretty even when I wasn’t. Then he had to go into hiding. I’ll be honest, I didn’t wait for him. I had needs.” She interrupted her monologue by scooping another spoonful of chocolate into her mouth. “We never agreed to wait. Then when I see him again he suddenly decides that we’ve changed too much! That suddenly I’m not his girlfriend anymore. He thinks I’m not a calming influence. I’m not a crazy ex, I’m not a stalker. I just want to talk about what happened between us—“

“Isabel, you don’t need him. Don’t you see that I’m more than willing to be your boyfriend? I care about you Isabel. You’re the one woman I’ve met that drives me wild and at the same time grounds me. You’re perfect Isabel. I just want you to give me a chance.” Clint explained as he held her hand.

Isabel looked at their hands and then up at him. “I…I don’t want to hurt you.” She said slowly. “I feel like if I dated you right now I would be doing it just to get back at Bruce.” Her eyes started to get misty.

“I don’t mind.” Clint quipped. “The best love stories sometimes start with revenge.”

“You don’t read much do you?” Isabel snickered.

“Even if it’s a revenge date it could lead to something else. What do you say?”

Isabel pursed her lips together. “Well, I’ve completely ruined my appetite tonight but I don’t want to put off revenge until tomorrow. Would you be offended if we just went straight to the bedroom? Instead of the walk of shame we could do the strut of shame. Oh god that sounded stupid.” She chastised herself after the words left her mouth.

“Yeah,” Clint agreed as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m not up for sex before the first date.”

“I have another idea. Probably equally stupid.” She said.

“I’m listening.”

“If you would be willing to make it seem like we had sex than I would be willing to go on a real date with you.”

“Not a bad idea but what do you mean by seem?”

“I was hoping you would know. I just want to really rub it in his face. Let him know what he’s missing by refusing to even talk to me.”

“Invite me into your room.” He whispered. “I have a plan.”

Once in her room Clint stood in front of her and started to ruffle her hair. It added volume but made it look like she had serious bedhead. “Where’s your lipstick?” He asked.

“On my dresser. Why?”

“Put a fresh coat on and rub your lips against my neck, almost like you gave me a hickey.” He answered.

Isabel started applying her lipstick.

“Do you have any sexy underwear?”

“Umm, you’re not going to j**z on them, are you?” She asked as she slowly started to rub her lips against his neck.

“No, I think having them hanging out of my pocket should be fine.”

“For an assassin you know a lot about revenge sex.” She mumbled as she continued to rub her lips against his neck.

“No, just good at strategy.”

Isabel threw a lacey black thong at him. “Are you sure this is going to work?”

“I think we look like a freshly laid couple.” He responded as he vigorously rubbed a small part of her neck. “Before you can ask I’m making it look like I gave you a love bite. Now, let’s accidently run into them.”

“It’s just before midnight so Bruce will be heading to the kitchen to get midnight fuel for his lab all-nighter.” Isabel offered.

“To the kitchen we go.”

On the way to the kitchen Isabel found herself giggling uncontrollably, suddenly it wasn’t about the revenge. She was having fun. She was finally having fun and it was all because of Clint. He probably was going to be a great boyfriend she thought as they dashed toward the kitchen. Once they arrived Clint leaned against a table and Isabel stood next to him awkwardly.

“It would be more convincing if you were right next to me. Like bodies pressed together close.” He whispered in her ear.

As she moved right next to him Clint pulled her closer. His hand was now on her butt; she wrapped an arm around his shoulder and rested her head in the crook of his shoulder.

“You’re a firecracker.” Clint said rather loudly.

Isabel smiled into his shoulder.

“What do you want before round two?” He continued.

“Anything that keeps my energy up. You wear me out.”

“Keep it down. Someone else is in earshot.”

Isabel giggled again.

Clint detached himself from Isabel and walked toward the fridge. “I’ll just get us some leftover shawarma.”

“Next time we do this it should be in a hotel, room service would be so much better.” Isabel purred as she looked at Bruce, who was also at the fridge. His agitation was subtle, his shoulders were ridged, his jaw slightly clenched, and his eyebrows starting to knit together.

“Got the food.” He said as he sling an arm around her hips. “Let’s eat it in your room babe.”

Isabel smiled and started to walk away. “Shawarma in the bedroom? You’re a kinky man Clint.”

As they headed towards the elevator they heard the fridge door slam closed. Isabel smiled widely and kissed Clint on the cheek. He was right, sometimes the best love stories start with revenge.
