Use these words in your story.
Demon, Possessed, Punished, Portal
I lost count on how many hunts I went on, but this was the last one when it all went wrong. We encountered and defeated a Maalik, an angel that kept guard of the resting place of Astaroth, a demon that would one day rise from the grave to open a portal to another dimension. Now, this wouldn't be such a big deal if the portal opened up to a nice and harmless place.
Instead it opens up to Hell and I'm not talking about the place where it's always on fire and the wicked are punished after death. Hell is actually an entity. It's a dark, parasitic being. It's massive, like a dark cloud and it's only goal is to consume souls. It doesn't feed off them but those souls become a part of it, they become one with it.
Sometimes pieces of Hell escape and infect people in the living world. Those pieces are called demons. Demons being a part of Hell all have a hive mind, with each having a different level of purpose, intelligence and very rarely a personality. Demons like Astaroth are stronger, smarter and can function separately from Hell. That is why Astaroth has a name. His purpose was to open one of the doors to Earth and to achieve it at all costs. Hell needs Astaroth to be able to outsmart us, to be successful.
Lower level demons, on the other hand aren't a priority and are only implanted with one goal in mind; to corrupt souls. Basically, they're the equality of worker bees. It's very common to see low level demons then there are higher ones. Demons are pretty much the cause of everything. They possess humans, control them, they are why houses are haunted by evil spirits which are actually demons, and why some humans are capable of doing heinous deeds. They were influenced by demons, taken over by them or sometimes the demons infuse with the soul of a still developing infant. We try to save, protect and prevent these things from happening but we can only do so much. And no matter how much we tell ourselves that we can't help everyone, it still gets to us.
Some people can handle the guilt better than others but it's always there. Demons take advantage of that, they look for the thing we regret the most and try to corrupt us. Unlike other humans our souls don't just become consume or infected by demons. We change, we become something else; something much worse. That's why other monsters exists like vampires, werewolves, gorgons, trolls, banshees, skin-walkers, and so on.
Over time we develop and train an unique ability that allows us to use our spiritual energy to manifest. This ability makes us powerful but it also makes us weak. We are too sensitive to the supernatural. That's why we must first train our mind. We need to shield it so that we don't let the energy influence our emotions. We train that before we train our ability. There's been theories that we gain such an ability because we are exposed to the supernatural on a daily bases. It leaves an imprint on us, causing a mutation and that's why everyone in the organization has their ability develop in different ways. We call it shift or shifting. It's how we can protect ourselves and use it to combat with demons and other monsters.
Jesse and I spent a couple of years training and dealing with the easy hunts. We were dealing with a supposedly to weak demon. But the creature released one of the seals that opened a portal to Hell. The seal was disguised as an old ballerina jewelry box and once it was broken the Apocalypse would begin. Astaroth came out of the first seal as well. We weren't prepared for that, nor were we prepare to fight him off. We failed. Jesse became possessed by Astaroth.
