After being told by Raina that Chazu was sick and that I'd better stay back, I did just that. Apparently his sneezes were dangerous, though I couldn't imagine how.
I chatted with Raina a bit more, who was still flustered and frustrated about something she was working with.
"What is bothering you, if not Chazu?" I asked Raina, somewhat confused.
Raina heaved a great sigh, and then glanced back at the locked lab door. "I'm trying to help a friend."
"Who?" I asked, trying to keep my voice light. Raina was not usually the melodramatic type. "Someone I know?"
"Doubt it." she replied, "The man who let you in - Colt? What do you know about him?" she asked.
"Um, that he is staying here and is apparently a friend of Chazu's." I replied, smiling, even though I knew that that meant that I really don't know anything about him at all.
"Hm. Well, it's not really my story to tell and all...." Raina started.
I gave her the 'no kidding, but you still need help with something, don't you?' look. She got it.
"Well, his wife is having difficulties." Raina conceded.
"With what?" I asked, all joking aside now.
"She is pregnant, and having complications."
I remembered the small child and older boy I'd seen earlier. "She has already had kids, though, right?"
Raina nodded. "Twins."
My eyes goggled out and my eyebrows narrowed at the same time. In retrospect, that must have looked funny.
"But-" I started.
"They are the little girl and taller boy you saw, yes." Raina sighed again, as if giving up on... something. "The boy is all vampire, and the girl, only half. That's how at age 2, the boy looks ten, and the girl is still all toddler."
I nodded, finally getting it, though part of me just wanted to scratch my head, as if I'd just been gonked. ( stressed )
"All right. So, not a first timer." I said, half mumbling. "And a species mix, as well, if the situation is the same." I looked up at Raina, who nodded.
"All right then." I said after a moment, in a much more matter-of-fact tone.
"What?" Raina asked.
I smiled at her surprise. "Well, I can help, I think. But I need to see her."
Raina nodded, and unlocked the lab door. We entered, and Raina locked it after us.
Five hours later, Raina and I left the lab, and locked the door behind us. Whispering and laughing, we went outside, sat on the porch, and had a soda.
I had never met a vampire before today. I told Raina as much, out on the porch. Her jaw dropped, as if realizing that it could have been a mistake to let me help without no real working knowledge of vampires. I shook my head, and took another drink of my soda.
"You could have done more damage than good!" Raina told me, almost harshly.
"Possibly, but not very likely." I replied calmly.
"Look, I don't care if you are part fairy, you still need a lot of knowledge about a creature before trying to heal it!" she said, her voice escalating.
"True." I replied calmly. "Unless you happen to be part angel." I said, looking up at the clouds pass by.
"Ya, maybe, but-" Raina stopped short in her tirade, and looked at me again. "Part... angel?" she asked.
"Yup." I responded. "A quarter. On my mother's side."
I smiled as I heard Raina let out a whistle next to me.
After that, we had a nice long talk indeed.
