Plots! Plots! #94 - The Cadets
"We shouldn't be here," Roux hissed, yet he continued to follow Cian's careful footing around the puddles caused by the road's uneven paving. Not that it mattered much. With the heavy rain pouring down around them, their clothes and shoes were already soaked.

Cian suddenly broke into a sprint, heading for shelter from the weather under a jagged piece of metal roofing he noticed in the distance. Roux followed suit, afraid to be left behind in an unfamiliar city. There was only a small patch of space that was shielded from the rain. Nervously, Roux pressed closer to Cian so they'd both fit.

The boys huddled against the dull concrete walls of the building, breathing heavily. A pink, neon sign for a tavern flickered eerily across the street, providing temporary light to the already dim streets.

"Are you happy now? It's way past curfew, so we're probably going to get yelled at tomorrow's drills. And I have no idea where the hell we are right now, besides somewhere in the Slums." Roux protested loudly. "And don't get me started on the fact that my socks are wet. Wet socks are possibly some of the worst–"

"Roux," Cian cut him off, leaning towards the shorter boy. "Listen to me. If we get something out of this trip, it'll all be worth it. We'll know what the different gangs' recruitment is like. Which will be valuable to the Cadets, and would improve our standings. They're always talking about how recruits should take initiative in the field."

Roux swallowed, all of a sudden acutely aware of how close Cian's face was to his. "I think they meant that we should take initiative when they take us into the field." He replied, turning away.

"Eh, I've had worse ideas." Cian shrugged, shoving his hands into his pockets.

He did, but Roux wouldn't have said that. Cian was always so full of creative ideas, and he had a bright energy that naturally drew people to him. He was good at getting into trouble, and was good at talking his way out of it. Roux considered himself to be more level-headed, less reckless. Yet he always found himself wrapped up in Cian's schemes.
