Flight
By: DarkDragonofChaos

“It’s finished! After twelve long years of trial and error it is finally complete!”

I looked up from my computer screen to stare at the complicated machinery. Suspended by iron cables it hung there, begging to be taken on its final test. I stood and made my way over various machine parts and white tiled floor.
They had all left already, all my hired help, it was already a little past dawn. I had stayed at the lab all night; I was just too close to discontinue the final niceties. It paid off though. Twelve years of endless failures, but this one would not fail, not this time. I had taken every aspect into consideration, calculated every possible outcome in vast detail. I had even spent lots of money to receive the chromium-steel alloy it was made of for fear it should rust!

I halted, once I had stepped over the last machinery component. I grabbed at the keyboard and punched in the access code to prepare the mechanism for use.

Once everything was ready I took up a small remote, with one button covering its surface. Then I hopped up onto the platform over which my creation hovered.

I stood and stared in awe at my masterpiece. My dream, made a reality. I let my sapphire eyes travel over its gleaming exterior, gleefully examining all the joints, folds, and curves, as I had done so many times before.

But this time it was different, this time it will work. If it doesn’t I’ll lose everything. I’ll lose my project, my funding, my house, and all my belongings. Funding for my dream was not easy to come by in the first place. I recalled the many times I had to start over with just the blueprints in my head. All because nobody believed such an idea was possible. Well, now I’ll prove them all wrong, the whole world! No, I won’t let anyone, have anything to laugh at me for, ever again.

With that thought, I proceeded by taking my T-shirt off in one fluid motion, and tossing it aside. I walked around it removing any unnecessary cords and wires, leaving it bare except for one iron cable to keep it suspended above the floor.
I backed up until I felt the cold metal press against my bare back. I slipped my arms into the ‘heavy-duty’ leather straps, causing the metal to press, deeper still into my back.

I took a few deep breaths, to calm myself from both excitement and fear. I looked down at the pitch dark remote, with the large red button. I closed my eyes and gritted my teeth as my thumb brushed the button.

I pressed my thumb down on the button and received a barely audible click in return for my actions. The sting I knew was coming was more than I could have imagined. A searing pain burned up my spine, as the sterile, steel syringes plunged into the flesh on my back. My body writhed in agony, then more violently once the needles connected with my spinal cord, but I forced myself to persevere. I made my body straiten, so I could align myself with the final syringe.

The last syringe, it was better than the rest. It was larger due to the wires and sensors hidden within. Instead of just attaching itself to the spinal cord like the others, this one released the sensors and they connected directly to the brain.
Perfect alignment was an absolute requirement, so I had a laser installed to pinpoint the desired location. The needle struck hard and fast, the pain even more intense. I fell limp, unable to move. I felt hot blood trickle down my back from every wound.

The sting was unbearable, and I hung there by the leather straps as waves of pain overwhelmed my limp body.

Eventually when I could move again, I stood strait. I couldn’t yet identify what it was, but something felt awfully strange. Then I realized I could feel something protruding from my back. It was an odd sensation, but I could feel the metal wings as I stretched them out to their full expansion. My new wingspan equaled approximately sixteen feet in length.

Newfound hope and excitement filled me. I was so exited I forgot the pain. I reached up over my head and unhooked the support cable from the equipment attached to me. I hastened across the floor and out the door to the small balcony. I leapt onto the concrete railing careful to keep my balance.

I decided the best way to test it was to jump off my nineteenth story balcony. I had nothing to lose anyway. So I jumped, my wings outstretched, my arms out wide. The steel wings worked, catching the air just as they were meant to.

I forced the thin metal plates to beat up then down repeatedly. Eventually I started to ascend towards the sapphire morning sky. As I flapped my artificial wings the speed of my accent increased. I realized suddenly that my eyes had been closed in sheer concentration. I opened them to reveal the city beneath me. The morning fog had materialized around the buildings and was now rolling through the streets.
Something glinted somewhere to my left. Upon looking I saw the lake, just beyond it the small air force base. I smiled then turned in that direction. I had always loved that lake I wanted to fly over it.

As I flew, I did some dives before swooping back up again. The flying experience was unsurpassed by any other. To think that someday the whole world would be able to feel the exhilarating joys of flight.

Everything was perfect, just as I had planned but better! My fate had finally changed for the better. I would no longer be the worthless nobody of nonexistent rank. Now I could at least know that I’m worthy of the air I breathe. From now on life would be sweet. I smirked, and I would never hear their cruel laughter again.
I was so absorbed in thought I didn’t acknowledge the deep rumbling behind me until it was too late. I did a quick 180 only to have fate change direction again and throw certain death into my face.

I had discovered the one, fatal flaw in my calculations…

…aircraft...

Did ya like it? Yeah I didn't think so... It needs some major editing and more descriptions and other stuff... I still can't beleive you read all that... sweatdrop
