Will was thrown from his bed and onto the floor, crying out in pain. Capt. Deep couldn’t hear him, but she did order Charlie to retrieve his friend and tie him to the mast as well as the others.
The hurricane was inescapable at that time, and so Capt. Deep sighed, praying that her precious caravel would last. It had survived so much; it wouldn’t be fair for something as simple as a hurricane to wipe it away now!
She tied a life-line to the mast near Will so she could hang on to him if he slipped. And him being in the condition he was in, slipping seemed perfectly ethical.
Capt. Deep felt tears swelling up in her eyes, with a haunting feeling lurking in her heart. Something was bound to go wrong, she could just feel it.
They approached the hurricane, with higher and higher speeds. They were soon in the near center of it, and she could feel her ship being pulled up in a swell as they approached the eye of the storm.
The ship rose up to the left, and almost tipped over into the ragging sea. Capt. Deep grabbed Will, and he grasped her as well. They clung to each other, and held on tight as if they had no choice but to hang on – which was truly the reality of the situation.
Will had salt water clinging to his brown strands of hair wrapping around his face and slapping Capt. Deep in the eyes. But Capt. Deep didn’t care – those strands of hair meant that Will was still on the ship, and not gasping for breath in the salty water below.
The ship tilted and rocked until it was extremely hard to stay standing.
Suddenly all was calm as the ship rested in the eye of the storm. A momentary grace, they searched for land, praying they could rest there until the storm passed. But there was nothing.
Capt. Deep seized control of the situation, and recommended following the eye to safety, but quickly dismissed the idea seeing how far off course that would set them.
Winds were beginning to pick up and so Capt. Deep ordered all life-lines to be tightened. Will’s leg was still in horrible condition, but he managed to stand and yank on hid rope. Capt. Deep held Will’s arm tightly and the eye of the storm quickly passed away from them, and Capt. Deep felt the ship bounce on the crashing waves below.
