Psyche resisted for a while, but at last her own curiosity, like Pandora's, got the better of her. When Cupid was asleep, she lit the lamp and cried out. Instead of a monster, her husband was a youth of radiant beauty. In her happiness she happened to spill a drop of hot oil from the lamp. It landed on Cupid's shoulder and awakened him. He reproached Psyche bitterly and vanished.
Psyche traveled the world, seeking her husband, but her was nowhere to be found. At last she came to the temple of Ceres. She won the favor of the goddess and asked her help to find Cupid. Ceres prevailed upon Venus to accept Psyche into her service. Venus was not forgiving. Instead she gave Psyche an impossible task of separating all kinds of grains. Psyche would have failed, but Cupid, seeing her again, could not restrain his love. He commanded the ants to do the separating for her.
Venus was still angry with Psyche and gave her other difficult tasks to perform. Psyche overcame each difficulty with the help of her mysterious helper. Though Cupid had been furious with Psyche, he still loved her. And so he went to Jupiter to ask for permission to rejoin Psyche. Jupiter listened. Venus finally agreed to cease her mistreatment of Psyche. Psyche was made immortal, and the two lovers were united, this time forever.
