Angelo crumpled the letter in his hand. He was furious. His rage showed more then he knew for Dussel placed his hand and Angelo's shoulder with a worried look in his eyes . He released the note and slid it into his pocket.'' The note said there is a sword waiting for me?'' he asked. The monk nodded towards the pillar on the left side of the door they entered from. Angelo walked over and saw the sword propped up against it. He picked it up, and returned to the others.
'' It is late,'' the monk said, standing to the side,'' you all can stay here for the night.'' He started walking towards a doorway that lead to the right side of the church. They followed him until he stepped into the hall,'' you all can stay in the last room on the left side. Good night.'' he turned and started back into the main room. The five walked down the hall and Gordon opened the door that the monk said.
There where five beds in the room, each with a red quilt placed on it. A window with matching shades sat on the wall. Angelo laid down on the bed nearest the door and quickly drifted to sleep.
* * *
Angelo awoke in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat. He had had a nightmare. He was on the battle field of the war three years ago, fighting demons. He slashed through one as he saw his father being stabbed in the heart. Each time he had the dream, he father died a different way. No one ever told him how he had died exactly. He wiped the sweat from his forehead, and look around the dark room. He was panting heavily, but the others continued to sleep. He glanced at each bed, to see who was where.
Dussel, Gordon, Valden, and..., he thought, wait, where's Lilly? Each bed was filled but one, where Lilly was supposed to be. Angelo's eyes had adjusted to the dark, and he noticed that the window was opened. He stood up, and climbed out.
Under the moon and stars, the same area as he had seen seemed completely different. The smell of the night air filled his head as he saw a faint glow of lights in the distance.
'' That must be South Border Town.'' he said aloud to himself. The call of an owl filled the area, and he continued walking. He walked under a large leaf-less tree, and noticed someone on one of its high branches.'' Hey, Lilly,'' he called,'' is everything okay?''
She looked down at him,'' Yeah, I'm fine. I just wanted to be outside. I'm not used to being in a real bed.'' The last sentence confused Angelo a bit.
'' Not used to a real bed?'' he asked, starting to climb up the tree, '' What do you mean?'' He reached a branch about the same height as the one Lilly was on.
'' I live in the forest. My family was killed, and my hometown was burned down a few years ago.''
'' Burned down? By what?'' Angelo asked, a kind of sorrowful connection forming between them.
'' My hometown was burned down,'' she said, recalling the memory,'' by the army of Reaoth.'' Angelo lost touch with the world as she told him about her past. He shook his head to regain his thoughts.
'' I'm....sorry to hear that.'' He looked back to his past, recalling the death of his mother, father, and the feeling, the feeling of being alone, that came with it. He eventually got over his pains with the
help of Alexander. He and Lilly had similar past, maybe it was fate that they met.
'' Why did the army burn your town?''
'' They thought it was being used as a place for demons to meet and form plans back at the start of the war.'' she looked out to the lights that Angelo had seen earlier. There was a silence, that was broken by a low growl.
It was Angelo's stomach. He hadn't eaten since the night before and he was starving. Lilly just laugh. He blushed, but in the dark, she couldn't tell. She reached into the pouch on her belt and pulled out an apple.
'' Here,'' she said, tossing it over her shoulder,'' but you owe me one.''
He caught it, and laughed,'' okay, I'll try to remember that.'' He took a bite of it, and reached for the necklace his mother had given him before she had died. It was shaped as a dragon, with a ruby as its eye, and a tail that resembled a key.
'' Use this to unlock the door to your destiny, just as I did.'' the words his mother had spoken still rang in his head. His mother was a great warrior. She had fought in, and won the Dragon Peak Tournament, the most deadly of all arena tournaments. The necklace, she had told him, is used as a key to open the gate that stood between the arena and the rest of the world. The necklaces were said to of been scattered a round the world along with a map to guide the way of the brave and the foolish.
''hey, Lilly,'' Angelo said finishing the apple and tossing it into the forest,'' the others will worry if we are not there in the morning, and the sun is starting to rise.'' He pointed to the small hump of light on the horizon. She started climbing down the tree, which Angelo took as her agreeing to return to the church. He followed her, until they
reached the ground. They walked back the way had walked, and entered the church through the window. He returned to his bed, and laid back down.
''Angelo?'' Lilly said, looking up at the ceiling,'' do you believe in destiny?''
'' Well,'' he answered,'' if you're asking if I believe that a person's life is preset, then yes. I believe in destiny.''he looked over to her bed to see she had already fallen asleep. Angelo sighed, and went to sleep himself.
