(copypasta'd from my DA journal)
Now, I've been browsing various forums and message boards and all I practically want to SCREAM and bash my head in every time I see this atrocity committed. It's somehow becoming more common amongst fans recently and I can't understand why.
I'm talking about people who perceive Sephiroth in such a ridiculously biased and cliche manner. The kind that go "oh he was asexually abused/ritualistically tortured/didn't have friends/no one liked him/didn't get HUGS and he's not really a big bad meanie he's just misunderstood and needs a hug!" My GOD people. Not every hot bishounen villain has to have such a retarded overdone past. There are other reasons why people go insane and become a villain, you know, other than they didn't get luvins as a kiddy.
Oh, and the logic behind that whole way of thinking is so ludicrous I feel like puking.
Point 1: "He was forced to fight and become a SOLDIER against his will!! Shinra made him do bad things that made him SAAAD and a broken man!!!"
Counterpoint: Fact - Sephiroth is the result of the JENOVA project. Fact - The point of the project was to create a being with the powers and genes of an Ancient who would lead the company to the Promised Land. It was NOT to create a breed of elite untouchable super-soldiers. Logically, then, Sephiroth would have chosen the path of a warrior on his own. The result of that choice was a display of exceptional strength and prowess in fighting which led to the creation of the SOLDIER unit of Shinra, which of course Sephiroth would still have been the strongest of and likely had a hand in creating.
Point 2: "He was abused/molested/raped/treated badly as a kid and he suffered lots and stuff!"
Counterpoint: Okay, seriously. Hojo is fickle. Once Sephiroth was born he was likely given over to Shinra, who probably had a nanny to raise him. Hojo would have had no interest in something with no perceived scientific value, and I'm pretty sure beating the stuffing out of Sephiroth for the fun of it had no scientific ********' value. He wouldn't have had to undergone any mako or JENOVA procedurs either; he didn't even know he was infused with Mako and Jenova cells and no one would've been able to hide weird injections and Mako Showers. He would've caught on, he's not an idiot. On top of that, Sephiroth, child or no, would've had the brains to split from Shinra if he'd been mistreated. They treated him well. My friend summed it up nicely: "Shinra may be a soulless corporation, but they won't risk a multi-million gil project to go wrong because he didn't get TLC." All his needs would've been taken care of by the company. And the rape/molestation crap is just damn yaoi fodder.
He would've gotten the best education available (likely at the Shinra Academy mentioned in BC). He could've easily made friends if he'd wanted too. He easily would've become that popular "handsome guy who is good at everything." But if he didn't have friends he probably didn't feel the need to make them. Angeal and Zack were his friends, because he enjoyed their company. Sephiroth may seem cold but it's obvious he's not completely anti-social and introverted.
And oh GOD how people ******** his personality up. Instead of being the calculating, confident and arrogant Legendary Soldier, he's instead a weak, broken, cynical and weary man forced to fight against his will. That's not Sephiroth, that's an entirely different character with Sephiroth's name and visage slapped onto it.
Sephiroth loves fighting. He's talented, strong, he knows it and hes proud of it. He would be insulted if someone pitied him. He doesn't need a hug, fer cryin out loud. Even Nomura said "It's true that in the fans' eyes, Sephiroth is very often sympathized with. At the same time, he's a character that has perfect confidence in himself, so I don't fully understand why people feel so sorry for him."
Now, I'll put my speculation on why Sephiroth was pushed to the brink of insanity because just looking at the Crisis Core info given out so far I can already tell. And it's way, way more interesting than some "Hojo touched me in my bad places" bullshit.

A long time ago, when I was still small, I hid in a corner of Home and cried by myself. Why I was crying, I don't remember at all, but you know, my pops found me there. What do you think he said to me? He said, "If your face cries, your heart will start to cry too, so...Anyway smile!" It's totally abnormal, isn't it. You know, even though I felt so sad that I cried, I thought "what fitting thing are you trying to say?"
But, they became words I couldn't forget. A heart that yields to pain, even times when it's dry like the desert, with some kind of start... yeah, even trivial things are okay, so if it can make you smile, you'll gain a little feeling, you know! And it'll become more than just dry!
Yeah, that's it! It's kind of like an oasis. At first, it's small but, if it really spreads out, even the desert can drink it in.
No, it doesn't mean to force yourself and smile, it means you should do it naturally. That's hard to do when you've given in, but, you know...I'm always thinking "If I could start it off, that would be great!"
In the beginning, it's a small smile. If I'm with everyone, wherever we go, it'll become huge, and then someday, it'll spread to all of Spira.
That's my dream!
Sore ga atashi no yume!

Character Rant: Rikku
Okay, I'm just going to rant for the sake of ranting, since no one is going to read this anyway.
I am seriousy tired of people who say "Rikku is stupid," "she got really dumb in X-2" and other similar opinions.
Seriously; one of the main problems behind this is very shallow knowledge of the character, her past, and her personality. Rikku is very intelligent; most of this is somewhat sumbliminally portrayed in X, but if you actually look at the events and other details in the game, you will understand how smart she is. She is 15 years old, but is very good with building (and disabling) Machina. She is also the leader (or possibly second-in-command) of her own salvage team. She knows how to pilot the ship, operate ancient machina, look for ruins, command a crew, etc. Second of all, she is very well versed in Alchemy (Spiran version) as shown in her Overdrive, Mix. You'll notice that this ability are carried over into X-2 and given to the Alchemist dressphere; hence it can be concluded it is Spira's version of Alchemy. It's also safe to assume that she's skilled with building and modifying weapons, possibly with the use of Alchmey, as shown by the appearance of the Customize option once she permanantely joins your party. She is also a theif, and seems to know by heart at least two fighitng styles, one with fisticuffs and one with double daggers, both styles being speed-based. She could also obviously swim very well, and fight underwater. In the story "FFX: Antoher Story/Eternal Calm" it is mentioned she is also able to teach and is probably good at instructing others.
Though she may seem "dumbed down" in FFX-2 (which I blame partially on Tara Strong and the script writers for giving her very blonde/bimbo-ish lines), she is still as well-versed as ever. However, with the dissapearance of Sin, she has been given a chance to lead a normal life as a teenager; having fun, being with those you care about, and not having to worry so much about wether or not you'll live to see the next sunrise. Perhaps it wasn't exacty obvious to many people, but Rikku was someone who was forced grew up too fast (mostly due to Cid, who seemingly distanced himself from raising Brother and Rikku after the death of his wife; probably because he didn't really know how to take care of them on his own). Despite her mature nature at a young age and the serious positions and situations she was often put in, she tried her best to act her age, and make the most of everything. In X-2, she was finally fully able to have fun and act like a normal teenager; this is also likely a reason to why Yuna idolized her, as she probably wanted to be able to loosen up from her otherwise serious nature she had gained and live more freely. While her dialouge was awfully shallow in the NA version, she spoke not so much in a ditzy manner as a cute manner in the Japanese version, much closer to how she spoke in X. The lack of serious issues and situations she was confronted with in the game may also be a reason as to why she seemed "ditzy"; since most of the issues weren't life-or-death, she didn't have to take everything to heart, and didn't need to exchange serious/intelligent dialouge.
Another thing to note, is that Rikku had lost a lot. She lost her mother, her aunt, her uncle, and even many friends (especially in the Guado-led attack on Home). Yet, in the face of her sorrow, and the possiblity of losing another piece of her family, she was someone who was able to remain strong enough to fight back her tears, and smile for the sake of her friends and famoly instead.
There are also several other things that miff me, one being the nickname "Yunie" that was only present in the NA version of the script; seriously, what is the point of a nickname that not only is the name number of syllables and even adds an extra letter to the original name!? Sheesh.
Anyway, that's my rant on Rikku and her character analysis. Hooray geekiness >.> mrgreen

HOKAY. So... yeah. I probably won't write here too often, and if I do, it might not be about me. However, since this is my first entry, I'm going to post something on a few personal policies of mine.
On Dating: I don't date. No, I'm not asexual, if you're wondering. I see no reason to subject myself to silly social games. I see no reason to enter a relationship with somone I don't really love, or are not completely interested in. A few months of being with somone under a false pretense of "happiness" is not worth all the pain and anguish within the relationship, or all that comes after. If you don't love somone, why even date them? Do you expect to start loving them? That's not how love is supposed to work.
I believe in soul-mates. Not everyone does. In fact, even a lot of people who do don't believe there is somone out there "for them." I think that this is why a lot of marriages don't work out. People don't wait for their soulmate, or don't believe they'll ever find one, so they go and marry some person they don't really love with all their heart. And those marriages end badly. I think if a lot more people didn't go off and marry somone they don't love, there would be a lot more happy marriages and relationships and more love in the world.
Anyway, these are the main reasons I don't date. I had two boyfriends in highschool, and after I ended the second relationship, I thought to myself, "what's the point?" and haven't dated since. I know there is somone out there for me and whenever I find them I'll know it. It won't just be a matter of "hey, they're kinda nice, I should ask them on a date." I'd rather save myself pain as well as keep myself open for when I do find the right person.
On Looks: Since this is somewhat relevant, I'm going to put it in this post too. While some may consider me shallow, I'm going to say that in a relationship, looks matter. I'm not saying only beautiful people should date, or whatever. But if somone is dating somone they do not find physically attractive, that relationship will not work out. It doesn't matter if that person is nice, or intelligent; if they aren't attractive to the other person, then things just won't work. While people may think this is a shallow thought pattern, one must take note that not everyone is attracted to the "Hollywood standard," so to speak. Some people may actually like people who are overweight, or what others consider ugly, and if two people are truly in love, then no matter what they look like to other people then they will find each other attractive. It's naive to say "looks don't matter" when they do, and I personally don't believe thinking this way is shallow, just rational.
