Dr. Collums, a detective, was shaving in his room on the second floor when he heard two gun shots and a woman scream "Help!" Tossing on robe, he ran into the hall. In front of room 213 a woman stood crying and screaming. Introducing himself, Collums looked through the door and saw a man slumped in an easy chair. A quick examination showed that he had just been killed by a bullet through the heart. "Try and get yourself together and tell me what happened." he said. "I'm Clara Samson," she sobbed "a few moments ago, I heard a knock at the door and a voice said 'telegram'. "I opened the door. A masked man stood there a gun in his gloved hand. He shot my husband, threw the gun in the room, and ran." The automatic pistol lay on the floor. Reentering the room he stepped on an empty cartridge shell, farther left he found another shell. They both belonged to the pistol. Above the body embedded in the wall, was another bullet. "All right Mrs. Samson" he said roughly "Tell me the truth!" Why did Collums doubt Mrs. Samson?
