Blood
"I'd never given much thought as to how I would die, but in the
place of somebody that you love seemed pretty good." the first time I
read that line from my favorite book (for many reasons.) I thought
that it was indeed the best way to die. But would there ever be
someone that I actually loved? I couldn't see myself ever actually
loving someone or being loved for that matter. My kind didn't deserve
love and were incapable of loving. No, loving was out. The minute our
hearts stopped beating literally was the moment they stopped
metaphorically as well. We are cold callous creatures that mate only
for procreation and for nothing else. Not like those weak vulnerable
humans... Those warm loving creatures that cherished everything in
their short miserable lives... In all my 400 years not once did I find
another creature with as much love? Perhaps that's what drew my kind
to them. To destroy them. Happiness froze in our hearts and changed to
envy which changed to hate... So that happiness and joy that we
ourselves cannot attain we shall destroy. That was their thought on
our "life". Not that you can call it that. I thought and felt the same
way, until that is I watched them closely. For some time, unknown to
even me I became fascinated with a human child. I began to watch her
and her kindness warmed my frozen heart little by little. I began to
see just how "strong" they were and how impossibly endearing.
Naturally my surrounding clan... Family for all purposes... They became
worried then were consumed with their jealousy of my attention. That
proved to me just how mortal those humans were, and just how inhuman
we were. It barely to a single flick of Christinal, my brother’s
finger to kill the innocent child and that single flick was all it
took to set my course. I was only 80 years into my new life when I
made my resolve. I hunted down and killed every last one, starting
with my "family" then the rest around the world. As pure bread I had
elite powers over many and succeeded in my slaughter quickly. This past
30 years I scoured the lands in search of any that hid. It's now my
goal to disappear from this planet as well, but how? Our bodies were
dead near indestructible save to our own kind, and a special breed of
humans. My only option was to seek out that bread destroyer. My name
is Emmaline Christina Marie Fluerstan. I am the last vampire and it is
my goal to seek out the last vampire slayer.

I had heard the rumors that, Byran, and elderly Russian man residing
in the small town of Durango, Co. was the last vampire slayer that
lived. I packed what belongings I had in the small black backpack and
headed for the airport. It had been many years since I had been in a
highly populated area and I was nervous I wouldn't blend. What year
was it even? What fashion trends have swept across the world? I boarded
the large trans-continental plane in London. Everyone appeared to
favor jeans and a t-shirt or sweater. There was the occasional mini
dress. I knew though my clothes were strange they wouldn't cause too
much attention. There was a new style that swept the nation,
considered "emo" I suppose is the word. A combination of rock and
metal. My ripped Victorian style dress wouldn't be considered
abnormal. But I wasn't concerned; I would stand out regardless how
plainly I dressed. Though I kept it cut short my silvery blonde hair
had an almost inhuman glow to it and though they would presume I wore
contacts my bloody red eyes would still concern them. My skin was
nearly translucent white and cold and hard as marble. I wore a coat to
diminish the risk of direct contact. I did not bother with my
appearance as my other kind had; the only accessory I carried was the
sing long red ribbon I wore in hair. It was the single long red ribbon
worn by the young innocent human girl. I wear it always as a reminder
to my cause. I walked through the extensive security check with a
chuckle. As if I would need an weapon to kill every person on my
flight within 30 seconds. I boarded the train quickly and waited in my
comfortable first class chair. The one benefit for being immortal,
even with hunting down vampires I had time to develop a large bank
account doing various jobs. I glanced around my seat. There was a
stuffy looking woman trying to pacify her spoilt child crying over
his broken video game. Two business men in deep conversation, over
building blue prints. One of which caught my eye and displayed the
usual reaction. A quick double skip in the heart beat, wide eye
glance; then the fear. He looked back go the papers, his heart rate
still erratic. I knew full well the man would steal glances at the
back of my head the entire flight; perplexed to the combination of
both fear and attraction. I leaned back and closed my eyes, not that I
would sleep, that being impossible, but I listened closely to the
people around me. Listening for me had a diffent meaning to a humans
"listening". I could hear a butterfly flutter it's wings a football
field distance away, I could hear a humans pulse and blood to an
almost visual level. But that is every vampire. I however being of
pureblood, meaning I was the product of two vampires, have excelled
senses and powers. I can taste emotions and hear every word of and
human no matter the distance once I lock onto their voice pattern.

The plane ride was long, for humans, but a blink for me. I was only
bothered once by the flight attendant and after giving her my special
stare she didn't look twice in my direction. Yes, knowing how to
paralyze your "prey" with fear came handy often. Though I pitied and
envied the humans, I still didn't like the idea of being close to
them. Some things are set in stone, and though bearable the thirst
they made me crave made me hate them. I didn't want to be a vampire,
but like many pure bloods I didn't have an option. As pure blood
vampire children, you are born craving blood and no amount quenches
your thirst. however, the craving for blood is the only similarity to
being a vampire; everything else is human like. Until around thirteen,
in which the heart stops completely and aging and growing slows to the
normal vampiric crawl. One vampire year equating to about 30 human
years. Then to never die but reach a max age of the human "45" and
becoming immortally frozen forever. I landed in the airport on time.
The sun was shining bright and warm. Ew. Though I wasn't as weak as
the other vampires that turned to ash, the sun did give me headaches
and I burned easily. The town of Durango had almost 300 days of sun.
Good thing I didn't intend on being alive that much longer.

The town of Durango was actually a bit larger than I expected, mostly
made of the college kids. I knew the old man lived in a small house
outside the city and off the local Indian reservation. But I wasn't
exactly sure as to where. My only option is to walk around the city
and ask about. I walked down the main street and saw a friendly enough
bar. It appeared to be styled after an Irish pub. I sat down at a
small table and looked around. Naturally everyone was staring back. It
was surprisingly busy, but it was five o clocks after all. It was the
after work crowd. I left my seat and stepped up to the bar to meet the
smile of a friendly looking man. His old blue eyes sparkled at me
almost hidden beneath his bushy white eye brows. "hello, ma'am what
can I do you for?" I was careful with my words, this was my first time
actually speaking to a human face to face. I carefully monitored his
emotions. He was indeed curious to my appearance. "uh," I knew humans
had many filler words for when they were thinking, but still wanted to
be acknowledged, such as ah, uh, um, and the usual drawn out
uhhhhhmmm. I glanced away from him knowing humans weren't fond of
direct eye contact for an extended period of time; especially when he
eyes starring at them were bloody red. "well, I am sear-" no,
searching would be to direct and impersonal, "uh looking for a distant
uncle of mine. Perhaps you've," I used their impolite shorting of
words, "heard of him? His name is Byran Taylor Reaulnt." the man’s eyes
went hard and his heart shuddered. Did I say something wrong? I thought
through what I said to hear anything of suspicion. I was careful of my
expression, calm yet slightly hurried; like any other wearied tracker
looking for a distant relative. But I nothing could I find was out of
ordinary, so what could it have been to set this man into the sure
signs of worry and distress. "Oh, I guess you’re here for the funeral."
I felt my face fall. All pretenses gone. He was dead, the one person I
needed alive that I depended on to end my life was dead. How ironic.
"well the funeral is in two days, the wake is at the Chiefs house on
the res." I nodded. Like I needed any more information. What use was a
dead vampire slayer to me. I turned and began walking out the door.
"uh, you may wana check the house first Taylor might be trying to skip
out the wake." he shook his head in dissaprovement. "I guess it's just
that rebellious age of being a teen. I remember when he was so nice and
gentle, always following Laurel around. But I guess, once died he
turned rebel. Now, with his dad gone..." his voice droned out. His
dad? Is it possible.... "uh, Taylor?" he stared at me wide eyed. "You
mean, you don't know him?" I shook my head, a little impatient at the
human thought process. Has I known him, I very well wouldn't of asked.
"Why he's Byran and Laurels son." he stared at me with concern and
disbelief. "He looks dead near me
identical to Laurel. such pretty native American blood. But he acts
like Byran did when he was his age. He's 18 now, I reckon." he smiled
at me, “bought your age...uhh" damn intrigued by this outcome I
lingered to long. When you linger to long, humans catch on they know
nothing about you including your name. Having humans know your name
when you’re planning on dyeing could form a potential problem. However
this man gave me information, that just saved me, so I would show my
gratitude through honesty. "I'm Emmaline Fluerstan, but Emma for
short." yes, humans usually chose short nick names when they had a
regarded old fashion name. “well Emma, welcome to Durango,
Colorado...uh sorry about the reasoning behind your visit." he smiled
half heartedly. "the house is down off of Red Rock rd. To your left, a
big red house, you can't miss it." I returned the same halfhearted
smile. "Thank you for your time." I was truly grateful. Byran Taylor
Reaulnt, had a son. This son, had the blood of a vampire slayer in
him. Though, there is a large chance he may not know it, this fact did
not concern me. The survival and murderous instincts of a vampire
slayer in the presence of a vampire would consume the boy. I chuckled
softly at the man’s comment as I made my way down the street. While I
had the appearance of at 19 year old, I was soon celebrating my 401,
birthday. A birthday I planned not to see.

The house was unmistakably red. It was painted as the old fashioned
red and white barn house. it would of been cute, had it been kept up.
It appeared to have years of neglect, the paint was peeling and dirty.
There was the appearance of once flourishing flower beds, now dead
brown shrubs. The yard was over grown with weeds and rusted mechanical
parts. Perhaps the father and son failed to clean it when the mother,
Laurel I think her name was, had died. I walked up the stony driveway,
an old blue ford pickup truck sat next to the peeling white painted
porch. I'm not sure why but my fingers tingled to touch the trucks sun
faded paint. I reached out tenderly, careful to not dent the already
banged up frame. The windows were open, revealing old black leather
seats. It smelled of earth, tobacco, and something I was uncertain of.
It was sweet yet woodsy. I am not sure why but I was drawn intensely to
this sent. I leaned against the frame, reminded of my short stature
and thankful for my laced boots. I leaned my head in and breathes
deeply. It was like cat n** to a kitten. "What are you doing?" I
froze; I had my heart still beat it would have stuttered. I had been
caught, but doing what. I came back to my sense, how peculiar that
sent was to ensnare me and cloud my sense. I didn't even hear the
approaching footsteps. I turned around wide eyed out of embarrassment, a
human characteristic I hadn't felt in more than 300 years. "I said
what are you doing?" he stared at me curious yet alerted to my
appearance. Yet, I sensed no fear from the boy. He was rather
attractive as far as humans went. He had an almost rusted skin tone
with long silky raven black hair. His eyes were a honey brown almost
golden. He was a bit taller than an average boy his age perhaps 6'7".
His hair was pulled back in a messily with a leather strap; decorated
with a black feather. His jean shorts were ripped and baggy tightened
on with a black leather belt. He wore no shirt, showing off his
perfectly sculpted body, almost every muscle toned. I had to admit he
was even more toned than some vampires I had killed. Then it dawned on
me, no fear. I had been staring wordlessly, appraising him to see if
he had what it took to destroy me, my eyes blisteringly red from my
recent kill before the flight. But I sensed zero fear from him, how
odd and most of all I only sensed the same curiosity I had for him, he
had for me. There was no grief that even the bar man had, just blank
curiosity. "I am Emmaline Christine Marie Fluerstan. You are Taylor
Reaulnt, I presume." he raised his eyes brows slightly his eyes
narrowing; the curiosity blazed in him. "ya...what's it to you?" I
immediately saw the rebelliousness the bar man spoke of. But I needed
to control my temper around him; he's the one person I needed
alive...so that I could cease to exist.

"are you the son of Byran Taylor Reaulnt? Related by blood?" this boy
would know soon enough what I was so I saw no reason in "being human".
He scratched his head and took a step closer, tilting his head
slightly. "and if I am?" "Just answer the question." I was becoming
impatient. He chuckled softly, "hmmm don't you know Halloween isn't
for another 20 days." of all times to b making jokes! I began to get
angry, which was hazardous to this child’s health. "look I have not the
time to be fooling around! Tell me are you or are you not the son
related by blood to Byran Taylor Reaulnt!?" he chuckles again,
"temper, temper.." he smiled deviously. Such a child. "fine. I'll come
back tomorrow; however, I will get my answer." he shook with laughter.
"jeez chill out, I'm just messing around!" he reached out and grabbed
my shoulder. "holy crap, your freezing! Come on, go inside!" I sensed
the sincerity in his words. He was genuinely concerned; another strange
reaction. I chuckled a little, "alright." he froze and stared at me.
Finally I sensed a slight twinge of fear; but also something else,
something I wasn't sure of. I walked behind him as he opened the door
for me. He had some manners I'd give him that; rather I'd give his
mother that. The interior of the house was just as the exterior. It
echoed of a warm family home; but was in manly disarray. "there it's
warmer in here." was it? I chuckled again temperature wasn't something
I could distinguish between. His heart gave the same strange
palpitation. I walked toward the sofa and sat down. I suppose if he
were to act human I would as well. "So, you going to tell me what your
business is with me? The ‘blood son of Byran'?" he chuckled at the poor
imitation of my voice. I shifted my weight slightly, though I knew
what needed to be said I wasn't sure how to tactfully say it. To be
honest I half already expected him to have killed me. After I remained
quiet for a while he prompted, "well, let's start with your name
again." "it Emmaline, but just call me Emma." I didn't like this.
Getting acquainted with my intended murder. "okay then, Emma. Why are
you so intent in knowing my heritage?" this would e easy if h prompted
clear cut questions like this. And yet I couldn't say It. I couldn't
tell him; this child that I was a murderous vampire that needed to
sully his innocent hands with my blood. Innocent. No, he was just as
innocent as that child that I was so fascinated by. I would not ruin
him. I sighed," I am a distant relative of Byran. I came as I suppose
representative of his foreign family, for the funeral." his curiosity
almost halted to a dead stop, which re-sparked mine. "oh. Well, do
you need a place to crash? Ya know till the funeral since it's not for
a few days." crash? O right the term used by casual teens; to mean
sleep and or recuperate. This though hadn't crossed my mind. I
figured I would be dead before night, so yes I would need a place to
stay... At least until the next flight out of town. "Yes, that would
be acc-" accommodating. That was a large term not usually used by teens.
"That would be nice." he nodded with finality, and walked into the
kitchen. That's when it hit me. the same intoxicating sent as Before
in the truck. Where was it coming from? The scent was so powerful in
the house. His voice broke through the drugged state, "So where are you
from?" I chuckled darkly, where was I from... The answer would seem
almost comical. So I answered honestly. "Transylvania." he along with
his heart froze, which made me freeze. Then as his heart resumed so
did his strange curiosity; that I now considered dangerous. If I
wanted to leave and allow this child his innocence; then he couldn't
know I was a vampire, or that they even existed for that matter. "are
you serious? Should you have an accent or something?" I nodded, “yes, I
once had once for a while. But it's disappears over the years."
"years? You don't look older than 16." for some reason, that made me
angry. And once such a trivial matter that carried such minute
importance it was almost laughable. "19 actually....in a few days." he
starred at me with wide eyes and what appeared to be a faint blush,
but I couldn't tell. He looked away to quickly. "when's your
birthday?" damn it all! Why did he have to ask such questions! I could
only pray he wasn't quick witted. Why not lie...but I just returned to
my though of his pure innocence and couldn't bring myself to lie to him.
"October 31st." once again he froze causing ne to freeze. He turned
back with an odd expression on his face a combination of disbelief and
excitement. "you're kidding right!?" I shook my head, but froze. He
crossed the distance and was nearly a foot away leaning on the back of
the couch starring at my eyes. Why? The one part of me most humans
steered from. He was curious beyond belief, so I looked away. The
first time, I was the one to advert someone stare. "do you have
contacts?" "Yes." I answered almost too quickly. "why red? It's kinds
creepy." I opened my mouth to comment on his strange colored eyes, but
it hit me like a ton of bricks "oh" was all that I got out before I
pushed him to the ground on the other side of the sofa. I pressed my
face to V of his throat. My throat burned, it was a flame. I began to
nuzzle his neck. Pressing my lips to the hallow, slowly breathing in,
tasting his sent. Everything about it pulled me in. But not of bite.
No I didn’t crave his blood but the scent. I felt myself begin to go
limp, like a drug induced coma. Like cat n**. I was in a trance,
broken only by his words, "hey!" they weren't scared or shouted words.
They were soft and gentle. His heart ragged. I jumped back behind the
sofa, perhaps with too much effort. A normal human, that wasn't just
molested by a vampire, would of noticed. I buried my face in a
tattered old maroon pillow that clashed horrible with the green ivy
pattern sofa; to release myself from his trance. Oh. How foolish of me
to allow myself be ployed like that. That was the trick of the vampire
slayers. To ensnare us and render us motionless in order to destroy us.
A powerful drug like smell recognizable only to vampires. I felt a
gentle warm hand on my back," are you all right?" I almost laughed I
nearly could of killed him with the force I tackled him and my fangs
so close to his neck; and he wants to know if I'm ok? How could I
explain this to him, without telling him the truth. I squeezed the
pillow tighter to my face. "look it's ok. I know your secret." I froze
and went rigid. Did he know all along and was toting with me? Had he
planned on killing me? There was so many questions that made sense to
this claim; but none of his emotions did! They were a combination of
clarity, lust, and calm. "it's fine I get it. You like me and came up
with some random excuse to get with me." I nearly fell over I was
laughing so hard. The audacity this young child dare have to
even begin to imagine I was lustful for him? I a vampire nearly they
are of his great grandmother, be lustful toward him? A
mere human infant barely considered a man in his own world! I felt
all his emotions change at once, now embarrassment, anger, and
confusion. I shook my head when he opened his mouth to speak. It took
nearly five minutes before i could stop my laughing. Rage his predominate
emotion. "I'm sorry...it's just no. No no no. You're very wrong."
"then what!?!?what was that!?" I froze again. I shook my head. "what
do you mean no!?" I just smiled lightly and stood up, purposely
leaving my bag so he knew I'd be back. "I'll be back I have a few
things to take care off." "what!?" his mouth fell open in
exasperation. He was fully mixed between anger and curiosity. I
giggled again and walked to the door, “I’ll only be a few minutes."
when I turned to walk out the door, something stopped me. "hey wait.
Minute." I glanced down at his large hand around my bare wrist. Didn't
the coldness bother him in the least? No that's not it he was to
determined to say what was on his mind to notice. "About-" I smiled
lightly careful to hide my fangs behind my lips. "Your life is far too
vulnerable to know." I turned and walked away. Leaving him with his
mouth hanging open and eyes furrowed in confusion. But he didn't have
to worry, I would be back for the night. It was then I realized he had
already drugged me with his scent. His wonderful tantalizing sent; that
sent my senses to a blur. A scent I would never be able to leave for
any long period of time and now my only options were A. kill him or B.
Tell him everything and ruin him with my blood. There was no escape
one of us would have to die.

My prey had no idea what was coming. Naturally what
I was did care about my personal beliefs. So I chose to pray on
criminals. This one in particular had been a serial rapist and barely
missed conviction twice. I felt his guiltiness and his excitement over
my pretty fair skin. He craved to paint it red with my blood. I smiled
at him flirty and allowed his to usher me into the dark ally. He
pushed me against the brick outside wall. He smiled vicidiously and
touched the ends of my hair. "such pretty silver hair...." he stared
into my eyes and froze. Yes, he hadn’t noticed my bloody, thirsty red
eyes before. He saw them now though and his heart raced with fear. The
fear he had once planed to instill upon me and the other poor human
girls. I smirked at his panicked backing away and short breath. "y-you
what are you!?" I chuckled sadistically "yes, what evil disgusting
monster am I? Well, I'm neither living nor dead," He tripped over
a loose pipe on the ground and fell. "However, I hear the shrikes and
cries of the women you've killed and I must say you’re a worse monster
than I." "S-stay away! I’m warning you!" I chuckled again stepping
closer to him. I reached out and grabbed his collar and threw him
against the wall. "or what? What could a pathetic human like you do to
me?" his heart stuttered to a halt. I flew in so fast he couldn't of
followed with his weak human eyes. I leaned and whispered into his
ear, “It’s unfortunate, though. My greatest wish is death and how easily
I give it to you." I didn't give him time to shout. I sank my long
fangs deep into his neck, puncturing deeply. The warm gushing of his
blood sent me into a frenzy. I pressed my lips tighter to his neck sp
no blood would escape me. The venom oozed from my fangs and his
squirming body and gasping breaths stopped. The pain of being bitten
is indescribable, like being cut into with a butcher knife and having
it be twisted in the open wound. But the venom, the venom that would
either make you into one of me or kill you, is worse than death. It's
worse than being set on fire, the burning so strong. It engulfs the
body completely burning you from the inside out, then freezing you numb completely, in either death or immortality. I killed him in
seconds draining him of blood. It was bitter, just as all the other
criminals. Only did the innocents’ blood taste sweet; it's been
hundreds of years since my last innocent. I felt my throat burn again
at the thought of my proximity to Taylors neck. His blood was so warm
through his skin. I tightened my grip on the man breaking his spine.
No. I had to stop myself from thinking that way. I pulled away,
dropping his drained lifeless body and walked in the shadows. I had
ran down to Farmington, NM in a little less than an hour, but it was
already dark out. I touched my wrist where Taylors warm hand had
grabbed me and chuckled. He truly was a strange human. I looked in a
piece of broken glass and noticed my blood stains reflection. My cheek
and the tips of my hair were stained in blood. I wiped off my cheek
and tried my hair but it wouldn't come off as easily. I sighed and
gave up. I began my journey back to Durango....back to Taylor. I still
hadn't made my choice yet, on who would die... The obvious choice was
it had to be me, but how would I even begin to explain this to this
child. This innocent warm human child, who took my hand and stared
into my murderous eyes without flinching. Taylor Reaulnt... A name I
would never forget.
