Character Form
Name: Leolai Aurosyne Species: Merian Gender: male Age: 20ish Terran equivalent. Couple hundred years Terran. Height: 5' 9" Appearance: It's easy to mistake Leo for a human. Rather slender, but well muscled from all his activities, he has a healthy build. Naturally tanned skin highlights his white lips and patterns around his eyes. While these closely resemble make up, they are actually natural markings specific to his species. He tends to wear his shoulder length, white hair pulled back in a layered ponytail, lestting it frame his face while staying out of his way. Leo's clothes are always practical, if typically intricately designed, usually black white or a shade of blue that clashes horribly with his startlingly pale blue eyes. Backstory: Leo wasn't up for the role his society or his genetics threw at him. So, he cheerfully flipped fate the finger, stole an outbound ship, and proceeded to put as much distance between himself and home as possible. After a series of unfortunate events he doesn't like to talk about, mostly due to his being completely ignorant of everything outworld, Leo found his bearings and became a jack-of-all-trades. Typically he masquerades as various Terran breeds to avoid any conflict over the position males hold in his own society. If he wanted any s**t, he'd have just stayed home. Personality: Leo is confident, outgoing, and has a deep love of life that can only be gained from continually eating the forbidden fruit. He tends to be straitforward, to the point of bluntness, and behaves as though he has the upper hand even when put at a great disadvantage. But for all of his mouthiness, he can actually be quite resourceful. Strengths: Adept at concelaing weapons, Leo more often than not has a very comfortable arsenal on his slender person. Despite this, he can still keep himself quick on his feet, and quicker at his mouth. He works hard at cultivating his web of informants and favors, and prefers to be at the head of all current events and interesting histories. If there's something he doesn't know, it's probably only a few steps to him finding it out for you. -- of course, that'll cost you. Weaknesses: His preferance for weapons leaves Leo somewhat lacking in skill at hand to hand. Though he can usually defend himself, anything challenging will send him to his back. His heavily bordering arrogant attitude has gotten him more then a few times in too deep to talk his way out of, and he's taken more than one beating for it. Though quite worldly now, certain subtlties of the universe still escape him due to being cloistered longer than free. He has an instinctive skittishness of women, and extreme dislike for canine-type creatures. And by extreme dislike, I mean the scream like a little girl kind. GOAL: To see as much of the universe as he can manage, cause as much trouble as he can, and get as far away from home as possible.
Species Form This is a generic form that applies to the entire species you play, not only your character
Name: Merian (Meer-ee-an) Subtype: Humanoid Lifespan: Roughly 1000 Terran years- sometimes longer for males. Gender differences: Merian gender difference runs so deep that the two sexes maintain nearly complete societal segregation, and are more often than not compared as different species.
Females inhabit the more central and technologically advanced cities, organize law, and generally run the show. They are known for their spartan, militant outlook and are the points of contact for interplanetary communication and travel.
Male cities tend to be much smaller and more intimately characterized. While it would be most accurrate to characterize women as people of war and science, the men would take up the role of artisans and scholars. Size: Normal range of height goes between 5 - 6'5" feet in fully grown adults. Appearance: While the Merian almost fully resemble the Terran, significant difference can be found in coloration of the fingernails, lips, and around the eyes. These colorations are glossy- often giving the appearance of make up- and span the conventional rainbow.
While pattern and combination of color seems to hold some corolation to familial lines, there is a definate randomized factor. These combinations and patterns hold great cultural significance to the Merian and can often determine a member's place in society. Diet: Omniverous, the Merian have a vastly varied diet, able to consume most organic things considered 'food.' Mating Habits: Because the fundemental temperment of the genders varies so much they generally cannot stand each other, a designated time to mate, called the Mingling, is set aside every year at the end of the spring season. At this time, males travel to the female cities and after ritual, wait to see if they are selected.
The only exception to this rule is the virgin priests, who are not eligable for Mingling until they decide to give up their posts. Culture: While it is arguable that the Merian have two entirely seperate cultures, some uniting factors remain. MeiRu's collective society has a passionate and intricate use of color in communication and design.
Both male and female society is heavily influenced by the shared religion which revolves around a God and Goddess.
This legend tells that the Goddess created males while the God created females, each in the image of their lover. They graced them with the many colors of the world, and for a time there was peace. Then, they came to a point of bitter argument, and quarreled so fiercely, they both left the heavens and vanished into the society they had created- the Goddess among men and the God among women. Believing that one day each would be born among their creations, boys were then raised as girls and girls as boys.
Over time, this led to a complete inversion of gender interpretation. (For instance, the Merian saying would now be 'you scream like a boy.')
It is the shared belief of MeiRu that someday the God and Goddess will be born into the world at the same time, at which point, they will reconsile. This myth leads partly to the coloration-based caste system which revolves around the combinations of color at the three points.
While each color and combination holds its own societal significance, black and white lipped children are so rare as to be born less frequently than once every other generation. When this happens, it is considered to be the birth of one of the dieties into the world. There has been no recorded instance of a male and female of opposite coloring ever having existed at the same time. Strengths: As a species the Merian tend to be lithe and fast, able to keep out of the way of trouble or sneak into places other may not be able to manage. Females are raised for strength and ingenuity, while males are often very skilled in craft. Weaknesses: Merian possess no special inborn survival traits, such as claws, thick skin, ect. Home world society coupled with a largely home based society often leave them vulnerable to attack. Prejudices: There is a tendancy in females to look down on males as the inferior sex- Merian or not. The opposite is often true in males, who seem to have an inbron aversion to the 'fairer sex.' Special Abilities: None to speak of.
