The lone soul stepped onward, slowly and uncertainly walking the hidden path before him. It was now as it always had been; Dark, distorted, and elusive. Every step taken was a chance. A possibility that he may misstep and fall by the wayside, never to find his way back. Such was the risk with any path he may have taken, however, and he knew it. He was not afraid.
Far ahead, a distance greater than he could possibly imagine, a faint light shone forth. The end of the path was what it marked, though the way to it was far from simple. This was what he looked to as he stepped. This is why he did not turn back or stray to and easier byway. This was the promise that would shine to him through any darkness. The promise that he would no longer walk alone.
Many years pass. The soul changes slowly, evolving miraculously from boy to man. The path lays before him still, hidden and treacherous as always. Yet, he walks on, fueled ever further by the promise. He simply cannot resist it's Siren call; The most truth he had ever known. All he could ever want was there, in the light.
He can see her now, the source of the light. The other soul destined to be his, and he destined to be hers, waiting patiently for him to finally come within reach. He is almost there, and is most tempted to simply dash forward, barely able to simply walk. Yet, he holds fast, taking every step with the slow, uncertain pace he'd approached with for may years. It is, in thruth, torment to see his dream so close, but just beyond reach. Yet, he endures, walking onward.
Finally, he can reach her. Finally, he stretches his hand forth to find hers, and let their fingers interlock. Her hand reaches out as well, but their fingertips suddenly fall short of each other. A steady stream of red pours from her mouth as she coughs, falling to her knees as she suffocates slowly. When he reaches her, the light is gone with her, never to be rekindled.
Tears fill his eyes instantly, and he mourns the lost dream that he will never find again.
