a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
“I'm scared, Xan.” Saki said softly. We were walking home, and the streets were almost deserted. We had departed quickly after the final curtain of the night, but most working people were already in bed, seeking solace in dreams. Saki's declaration was the first thing that he'd said to me all day. Suki bit her lower lip, and looked up at me as well from beneath her bangs. She didn't need to say anything to let me know that he spoke for both of them. They both still seemed so small to me, delicately boned and sometimes seeming painfully thin. As mature was they seemed, they barely topped my waist. (of course, I was a fairly well grown young man.) There in the streets, I reached down, and hitched each of them up on one hip.,
“Oie, Xan!' Saki laughed.
“You're going to hurt yourself!” Suki protested.
“We're too big!”
“Hardly.” I scoffed. “Don't worry. We're together, right? We'll be fine.” And I carried them halfway home like that.
