a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
I woke up in bed. Not my apartment, but in the room I had grown up in. My life in London grew faint, like a dream as I sat up, and swung my legs out of bed. Then I remembered; my parents had just come home from their trip to the continent, for some reason, it was as if I hadn't seen them for years, instead of mere weeks, and I missed them terribly. In the back of my mind, my life in London faded like a bad dream; and something raged. I dressed and hurried downstairs regardless.
And there there were at the breakfast table. The last memories faded like morning mist, and I greeted them fondly, eager to hear about their trip, and who had left my father a legacy so great it needed to be claimed in person.

It had apparently been at least a very nice trip and they had enjoyed it; though, they wished, in retrospect that they had brought me along, if for no other reasons, because everyone should spend some time traveling on the Continent. I glibly retorted that they could send me on a grand tour later. Without them.
Life went on, years passed, eased by the inheritance my father had come into. I did attend school with Henry, making the top of my class. College flew past; I joined my father's practice; it all went past as a blur. I married a pretty girl, that Henry introduced me to- the cousin of one of his friends. She was sweet, and was an exceptionally talented watercolor artist. She liked to come up with a new nickname for me every week, though mostly she called me dear.
Suddenly there were children. My children, with the auburn hair that ran in my family and ... odd colored eyes, and.... and...
They.
Were.
In.
Danger!
