as you may or may not know i work in tech support... here is some of the stupidity i have to deal with:
stupidity level 1
• had to spend 30 minutes explaining how to right click to someone, no he was not a mac user.
• had to explain that the purple keyboard plug goes into the purple port in the back of the computer, not the green one three times to the same person in one day.
• had to deal with someone telling me they know how to reboot their computer when their idea of a reboot is closing all the programs out, they cut me off every time i tried to tell them they had to turn it off and turn it back on and told me i was very rude.
stupidity level 2
• a person kept complaining that their monitor was broken so they were issued a new one, later that day they complain that it did the same exact thing, which they could not explain in detail. a person was sent over to check out the situation and it turned out she had at least 20 magnets taped around the screen which caused it to have discolored and black spots. the kicker is the back of the second monitor said "WARNING! please keep magnets away from this device".
• some guy called complaining that he could not connect to the internet and that it was really important so we needed to rush someone over there ASAP. at the time we were swamped and "someone would be over as soon as they were free" was not good enough, he wanted someone now. i told him that would not be possible since everyone is currently helping someone else so he was like "what about you? why can't you come over". i can't leave the phone unmanned or i will be in huge trouble. i tried my best to help him trouble shoot but he was being less than informative. basically all he would tell me is "the internet thingy keeps saying the page could not be found", he would not tell me what site he was trying to access saying "it's not important" and would not try accessing other sites. finally when i had a free moment i went over there... first off the computer was not a network computer and not connected to the internet at all, secondly he was trying to use adobe reader as a browser and the "page can not be displayed" message he claimed to see was not even there.
stupidity level 3
• someone called complaining that an overhead projector was not working. she was not being very clear on her error, just demanding that i send someone up there. the problem is we do not have anything to do with projectors. i needed to know if it was truly a projector problem or a computer problem- i can help with the computer one. her answer to EVERY GOD DAMN THING i asked was "you need to send someone up here right now!". i calmly explained to her several times that i need more information before i can send someone because if it is a projector problem we can NOT fix it.
she was not hearing a word i said... she said all snappy to me "get your supervisor on the phone right now! i want to talk to at least a MSgt because i need someone who actually knows how to do their job!" i told her "ma'am, i know how to do my job and i am doing my best to assist you but nobody here will be able to help you with your projector you need to call XXXX, if it is a computer problem you need to give me more information." i kept asking for the computer name and the way she responded you'd have thought i called her a whore. "wh-what??? NO! NO! get your supervisor right now!"
i had to ask someone to walk over to VI and get someone to talk to her... my supervisor would just tell her the same thing. while i could've handed him the phone and ended it easily i wanted to do it on my own to prove to her i am capable of doing my job.
my job isn't to play telephone operator and direct phone calls to the proper shop or to physically fetch people from other shops to answer questions but i did that any way. i could have told her "overhead projectors are not our department, no one here will be able to assist you please call XXXX have a good day."
at this point i don't know what her actual technological problem was but i did here that her fix was just pressing and holding the select button... LIKE IT SAYS RIGHT ON THE PROJECTOR.
her last remarks were that i was "less than helpful"... she is the same person from the reboot episode.
