“I…I walked into a door.” Susan laughed nervously, but she’d failed to hide the briefest of glances in Lewis’ direction, and Claire instantly knew what had happened. He’d done it.
She snapped. She was used to his behaviour, but he had no right to inflict it on Susan. That was the last straw.
“You cruel, callous b*****d,” Claire hissed.
Lewis stared at her with a glazed look. “What?”
“You did it, didn’t you? I bet I can guess what happened as well. You got her drunk, slept with her, and then, when she said she’d tell me, you got angry and punched her, because you saw your meal-ticket slipping away. That’s all I’ve ever been to you.”
“O…of course not, Claire,” he stammered, surprised by the sudden venom in her voice.
“Liar,” she snapped. “I can’t stand to look you.”
