For many years now, I have always held an interest for elemental magic. But only in the past year or two have I fully taken upon myself the task of trying to sort things out. There have always been debate on elemental magic, see. What elements there are, what are not elements, how elements are controlled, etc.
After several attempts, I made what I thought was the perfect diagram. But, after putting it to the test, after several uses, it proved faulty, leaving things out, and other parts to restricted. So, I organized it again, however, I kept the original base. It spread from there, and I have finally, based on many ideas, the ideas of others, and largly my own theories, created a system of elemental magic that actually works.
THE ELEMENTS
~ What are the elements - how many are there, what can you do
The basis of magic, in majority, is focused on the different aspects on which in the earth is founded upon. These "elements," as they are called, have been disputed upon for many years, trying to determine the order and catergorization. But, finally, a promising system has been created to end the dispute.
Most think there are four elements, as suggested by the Greek philosophers(earth, fire, water, and wind), with the inclusion of two additionals, light and shadow. From this, elemental magic has branched out, including lightning, nature, and even strange things like fate and destiny(which really are the same thing).
All this may seem well and good, but there is no real way to classify these elements. Until now, that is.
Now, this requires some explaining. the picture above simplifies this greatly, so I'll just say the obvious, instead of having to spend several paragraphs describing each element's location
The center-most elements, arranged in a hexagon, are called the Base Elements, and are commonly reffered to as the Six. These are the basic fundamentals of magic which all magic can be broken down into. In order counter-clockwise, the elements are light, fire, water, shadow, earth, and nature. Two questions come up when I say this. Where's air? Aren't nature and earth the same thing?
False, both. The second question must be explained before answering the first. Earth is based of exactly that, Earth; rocks, precious stones, metals, and the like make up earth. Nature, on the other hand, is closely tied to life; animals, plants, weather, and air are included in this. Air is what is called a Sub-Element, or a Secondary.
While there are six Base Elements, there are ten Secondaries. again, in counter-clockwise order, they are:
time, lightning, heat, air, frost(chill) illusion, death, erosion, metal, air(seen twice), life, illusion(seen twice)
Now for explaining. Time is a rarely controlled factor of the world, but when it is, it is highly beneficial...and dangerous. it is closely tied generally to light.
Lightning is a combination of light, fire and nature. Because of this, it is not a true Base Element by standards, and so is catergorized as a Secondary.
Heat is a side effect of fire, mostly, but sometimes can be manipulated. Those who can use air generally can control heat, and frost, as will be explained shortly.
Air is, in fact, a Secondary of both water and nature. Water has three forms, one of these being a gaseous state. Hence, air. Nature, as explained, involves anything that has to do with life, mainly. Air can indeed control life; you breathe it to live, in fact.
Frost, or chill, is similar to heat, except backwards. Instead of heating the air, you cool it. when using water, freezing it becomes ice, also making it a Secondary form.
Illusion is a strange Secondary. Rare as well, it has to do with distorting reality. Shapeshifting is usually related to illusion, and it is not uncommon to see invisibilty as a trait as well. It is linked to light and shadow, usually, but can rarely be seen with water and nature, as well.
Death magic is exactly the name; death. Necromancy is the common name for this Secondary, linked directly to shadows.
Erosion is a strange Secondary, as well, nd is extremely rare, to the point of non-existence. Erosion usually has to do with speeding up the decaying process, and the proccess of weathering, both physical and chemical.
Metal is a direct link to Earth, as it is found in rocks, usually deep beneath the earth along with precious stones and such. Metal has unique characteristics, however, that make it it's own catergory.
Life magic, lastly, has to do with exactly the name... life. Linked to nature and light mostly, life is a must for those who are medicinal and doctoral in nature. Curing and healing people, and even bringing people to life, if only dead for a limited time, are specific characteristics.
Four more remain, to clear up some maters that may be questionable still. There are four elements that reain on the outside of this system, and they are called the Uncontrollables, or the Rims, more commonly. Creation and destruction are opposites, their names explain their purpose. And the last two are knows as fate and free will. In otherwords, whether your life is planned out, or if you have a choice. This is debatable still, but there is no doubt that any of these are not actually elements, but do take part in the world's ways, and influence everything.
~ Controlling the elements
Elemental control for many is difficult to accomplish in itself, Hence why magic is not widely used. Most who have innate magic, or magic born in them, are able to have easy control. Notice the word 'most' in that sentence. There are many others who still have to practice their art in order to achieve control.
To begin with, magic always lies dormant, ready to be brought out by the user. whether willfully or against, depends upon the situation. Sometimes, if one is in danger, magic will act with a will of it's own to attempt to save the 'host.' Returning to the topic, when magic is brought out, the user must focus on the thought of using magic, and summoningthe energy required. Along with dormant magic ready to be used, there is also a pool of energy waiting to be used along with it. Depending on how much magic potential you have corrolates with how much energy you have. This is what gives magic users, when magic is in use, 'supernatural abilities,' if you will. Jumping extra high in the air, being able to lift and stop heavily weighted objects, superhuman speed, and other such abilites are quite common.
After studying the topic and forming several hypothesis on my own, I have uncovored the possible process in which magic is used. That is, if magic could be used.
The beginning of magic and the energy that fuels is, where ese, but the heart. For many, the heart is just a heart; it pumps blood through the body, delivering the neccesary nutrients and oxygen throughout. In the spiritual sense, the heart is what helps us define right and wrong, and is the symbol of love and kindness.
On a yet another level, not fully in reality even, there is the magic sense of the heart. The heart is where one's will power can be found, and magic and energy is stored here. when using magic, the energy acts like adrenalin; pumping through your system, usually via the blood stream, stimulating the body. excess energy is passed out through the body harmlessly, and is defined as the aura. Those who use magic can sense this aura, and one's aura levels usually are able to help one identify how strong another is with magic.
Concerning the mind, it the most important orgam of the body that keeps us alive. It's how we think; it helps us plan, stimulates our senses, aids in the use of logic and reasoning, math and science, communication, bodily control, and thousands of other tasks. It is the powerhouse of the body, and without it, we would not live. In magical sense, the brain helps not only control the body, it also controls energy levels and how much magic needed. It calculates the output required and the input needed for it. In this sense, the mind is what hones out magic and energy.
The body itself is the final stage of magic use. After the mind performs it's task, it sends the signal to the body what to do, unconciously. This is how magic is used. for many, using magic is a more physical task, requiring many hand and arm movements, and taking one's stamina to the extreme. Other times, the only thing required to do is utter a few spoken words, and your expecations are performed. This depends on the magic being used, how you're using it, to what extent, and so on.
And to think, thinking of using magic takes place in a matter of milliseconds, and the action in seconds. The same goes with anything else you do, not just magic.
