"He's really he isn't he? It's not just my fever acting up again...." she asked Kai numbly. He sighed running a hand through his white hair. Lysel was barely holding herself back. She felt such a deep rage, such a deep anger that she felt sharp tinges of pain as her fingernails tore into her palm.
"Yes, he is really here." he told her, impassive and withdrawn. She almost felt hurt, but reminded herself that, it was the way he acted to things he couldn't handle. She wished she could do that. One last look to the carcass of the recently slain gazelle she turned from Kai and stormed over to the one person she would have never wanted to see again in her life. Norune. He looked much the same as she glowered at him. Dark, bluish hair that was cut just below his ears and his red eyes now at least showing life under them. Unlike the emotionless red eyes of her fever dream of him. Smartly he said nothing nor moved to touch her. Forcibly she relaxed her hands. She knew what he must be seeing. From her five years in the desert she had vastly changed.
Her black hair was dry, wild, and without must bathing had clumped together, she had cut it short to prevent it from becoming thick clumps like the elders. Her skin had changed from a pale white, to a nut brown and lastly her eyes were back to their normal color, blue. Just like her fathers eyes. She had also gotten taller and now instead of thin arms and legs had toned muscles and more wide stomach. The desert was a harsh place, if you were weak you would die. The elders -once she recovered from sun fever- told her to care for herself and others, or they would not care for her. She had to be strong to survive. It was cold, but at least now she was part of a real family. The most real family she had ever had.
"What do you have to say for yourself?" she questioned finally able to speak to him. She hated him and refused to look back at him, instead glaring right at his feet. He opened his mouth to speak but closed it and moved as if to touch her but drew back. At lest he was smart enough to know he couldn't just say a few words and expect to be forgiven.
"I'm sorry." he said at last. She grimaced, she hated even his voice. At least now it had emotional tones to it. "I should not have left you there." She rose her hand and quickly backhanded across his face so hard it knocked him to the ground. He was prepared for that.
"Sorry wont slice it." she told him her voice dripping anger. "You left me, ALONE, and you know what happened? I was captured by the Trackers and TORTURED." she told him, her words spilling out like a wall of water breaking out from a poorly constructed dam. "When they found I knew nothing of where you went they let me go, expecting to be grateful! They tortured me! Then, Gretik came. We met him before, and you nearly killed him. He wanted vengeance and he wanted to rip my heart out along with any other in me to feed to his false goddess! You have no idea what its like to watch helpless as women, men and children before you have their hearts ripped out in front of you and you can't do anything! I don't even know how I escaped, but I did. I was running, and running. Lost in the sands. I have never felt such pain as loneliness can bring! You left me alone! You broke your oath to me. Oathbreaker." she hissed and turned away from him to walk back to Kai. He stared at her impassively as she shook.
"It will be alright." he told her soothingly and hugged her to his chest. "It is alright, I am right here." he said rubbing her back. She sniffed holding back angry tears and smiled at him. A smile less pained and forced then most of her smiles have been for five years.
"Okay Kai. Lets get this meat back to the village. Maybe we can talk to the elder about our binding ceremony later." she said simply and helped him to put the carcass onto the camel. She took a few calming breaths of the clear air. "If you want to know the way Oathbreaker then you better hurry up and follow." she said casually behind her to Norune as he stood up rubbing a red cheek.
"You won't ever trust me again will you?" he asked making her stop to looked back at him with hard as granite eyes.
"Only a miracle of the Ancestors, True Goddess, and The God will make it so." she said with all the truth and assurance in her.
"Lysel, are you really certain you want him to come with us?" Kai asked her. She shrugged.
"I've spent my anger for now. Hey who knows, maybe I can stop beating up all the boys in sparing matches." she said and laughed. Norune dragged behind the two as they chatted companionably. Binding ceremony...they were getting married. He shook his head and rolled his now sore jaw. Well, at least she was happy...right?
