Today's subject is: How to get Mew in Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow.
For some reason this subject tends to get a lot of haters. So, let's clarify a few things first.
1) This method is indeed an in-game glitch. If necessary I'll post youtube links to varify that it does in fact work.
2) I understand that some people feel that using glitches takes advantage of the game, and that Mew was never meant to be obtained in these games. However, Satoshi Tajiri did in fact intend for Mew to appear in the Gen 1 games. Yes, Mew was meant to be found via the glitch method.
3) The most common question asked is whether or not this glitch is harmful to the game in any way. The answer is no. It will not corrupt the save game or anything else.
4) Yes, I am aware that a gameshark can be used just as easily as this glitch. However, I do not promote the use of gamesharks as I do not believe it fair to use one. This is my opinion, I am indeed entitled to it, so no bashing please.
Finally, glitch explaining time ^_^
You will have to go to Cerulean City. After you defeat the trainers on Nugget Bridge, there is a trainer to the left of it hiding in the grass. Do not battle him, as he is vital for the glitch. Make sure to save the game in case you mess up. You are going to want to position yourself just outside of this trainer's vision. Then take one step toward him and immediately press start. If done correctly, the start menu will pop up instead of you engaging in battle. Then either fly, dig, or use an escape rope to go back to Cerulean City. As you leave an exclamation point (!) will appear over the trainer, as it would when they try to battle you.
Once back in Cerulean City, go back through Nugget Bridge but this time head towards the trainers on the right (heading towards Bill's Cottage). Remember the Youngster with the Slowpoke? You need to battle him. Make sure that he walks up to you, because at this point only the buttons that move you will work. (A, B, etc are disabled for now) If you dont let the youngster walk up to you then you'll simply be frozen in place. So, battle the Youngster. Once you win, head back toward Nugget Bridge. About half way there your start menu should pop up on its own. Exit out of it and a wild Mew will appear. Mew is typically around lvl 7. Make sure you have a lot of Pokeballs and a way to either paralyze it or put it to sleep, because it is hard to catch.
Now, if you want to catch Mew at a lower level, when you battle Slowpoke have a Pokemon use growl on it 6 times before you defeat it. This causes Mew to appear at lvl 1.
What's even more awesome is that this glitch can also be used to catch other rare Pokemon. Continue using the guy in the grass as your escape to town guy, and battle the other trainers surrounding the Youngster.
