a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
It sounds kind of silly now, thinking about it, even knowing what I know now. But I can remember book upon book of leather bound volumes filled with strange illustrations and crabbed handwriting. The alchemy, which is what fascinated me the most, was the most benign of it. Henry, I think, just thought it was a lark. He didn't have any harm in him. Cedric, one of his classmates however...

Cedric, as I understand was a younger son- far out of the line for inheriting a title, or even very much money, and not over blessed with looks. Looking back, I could see how he could resent both Henry, and myself. Henry for his title, and me, for my looks. I did say I was a good looking young man, did I not? Ah- perhaps I underspoke. I was a foolishly good looking young man. Who wasn't aware of it most of the time.
But I digress- Cedric wanted all that he did not have; and if he could not have good looks or a title, he wanted money and power such that it did not matter that he had neither. And what he lacked in looks he more than made up for in brains. He was... frighteningly intelligent. He had a mind like a freshly honed knife. He was the one who did most of the code cracking, enabling us to make use of the grimoires that the little `literary group` brought together. I, in fact, even contributed a small volume bound in red leather that I had found amoung my aunts effects before I had to leave her house, as well as a second, larger volume that I had come across in a used book store. The man who was selling it had no idea what it was, thinking it was some sort of poorly drawn herbal. I acquired it for three pounds (a not inconsiderable sum for a young actor, I might add) and found myself, after translating it no poorer for the purchase.
