a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
The night in question was cold and had a new moon. Not that it mattered;l even in the poorer parts of the city, the dim twilight of burning lamps made it bright enough to see in a dim way. And I saw Edward.

It hurt, unexpectedly. I hadn't realized how much I loved my friend, I suppose. It had hurt that he was gone, but seeing him again, even as a vision made my heart ache like it used to for my parents. But the tears that welled up thretaned to disrupt the spell, and I forced them away; I was doing this for one reason only to find Edward's killer and give myself, if not him closure and rest.

Given what I knew of him, it wasn't surprising to find him in a brothel; his marriage, was contented, but not happy; there was no joy in his marriage bed. Nor was it much of a surprise that the company he was keeping was a young man, not a young lady. (young being a polite term, though the man in question was of the same age group as I was, as opposed to older, or even Edward's age (he was a few years older than me.) Even as I watched, he turned away, and left, encountering on his way out another man, tall, with a somewhat foreboding aspect. From his clothes he was a man of some wealth; instantly, I disliked him, and feared him, and could not understand why. Edward seemed to have none of my distrustful feelings, and they went into the night together, chatting amicably. This would be the night that Edward disappeared. It would be two more days before his body was discovered; and through the spell, I would find out what happened in those days.
