a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
When I woke up, I wasn't even lightheaded. I felt warm now, but Edward, lying beside me was cold, and still.
“Edward? Edward!”
“He won't wake up.” the voice brought me to my feet, out of the bed. “He's young yet.” The vampire, who Edward had called 'Vlad' leaned against the door frame. “He has years yet to go before he will be able to walk or even wake, in daylight.”
“It's morning?!” I exclaimed. My jacket was draped over a nearby chair and I reached for it. Vlad's hand covered mine. He wasn't wearing gloves now, and his nails had a strange sheen to them. I looked up at his face. He smiled.
“You don't even know where you are.”
“I have to go. I have to work.”
“Would you go without saying goodbye?”
I glanced over my shoulder, at the curtained bed.
“I have to go.” I shrugged my jacket on.
“And what shall I tell him when he wakes up?” Vlad inquired as I pushed past him.
“That I'll be back.”
He smiled and I found myself crushed against the wall.
“Good.” he whispered. “We have still not had a chance to talk.”
For a moment I struggled against his much stronger grip, then relaxed. He would either let me go, or not. There was not much I could do about it, either way.
“You're awake. And strong.” I said narrowly, with a touch of challenge in my voice. “If you want to talk with me, come with me.”

And he smiled.
