a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
The day turned hot; unusually so for early June. I had hidden myself in the basement, so no one would remark that I wasn't eating lunch. Instead, I was taking pain killers- and strong ones. The need for them had been fairly recent, and I wondered that Edward hadn't noticed. A Sound behind me caught my attention, and I turned quickly.
Vlad, impeccably clad despite the heat stood behind me. His eyes were dark; and angry.
“Alexander; you are not so stupid as to not realize what he meant.”
I backed up of my own accord. This was not the gentleman that I'd almost become friends with; this was the vampire that I'd met that first night. Full of power and dangerous.
“And what will you do now?”
“What can I do?” I demanded. “You know me; I'm nothing; I can't fight you magicaly, or physically; there is no where I can turn for help.” I flung up my hand in disgust, as I stowed my pill box in my breast pocket. “What would I say to a priest? 'I'm being hunted by vampires; whom I've been in the company of for months; oh yes, and I've been sleeping with my friend, who's been dead more than six months. Do you think God will forgive me enough to protect me, Father?' “ I glared right back at him.
“God wouldn't protect you anyhow.” dismissed Vlad. “It takes a man of great faith and heart to use his God against us.”
“Then there's still a lot about your kind that you haven't told me.” beads of sweat appeared on my forehead, and only part of it was nerves. Though the fever of last night had broken, it was far from gone.
“You're dying, Alexander.”
“Don't you think I know that?” I retorted, bitterly honest.
“Edward wants to make you one of us.” he didn't react to my outburst.
“I realized.” I looked down. I couldn't meet his eyes any more. My hair fell in my eyes.
“I thought you might.” He sat down, keeping a fair distance from me. “And I'm to gather that you've already made your choice?”
“I suppose I have.”
“Ah.”
When I looked up again, he was gone. I fell to my knees and cried, though I was uncertain why.
