a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
I woke up in my own bed. It was some kind of a surprise. I sort of didn't expect that. My head was also clear. I sat up, and saw by the sun, that it was almost dark again. I wondered what had happened to the twins, and as I swung out of bed I saw. They had curled together like puppies against the wall. I got up and dressed as silently as possible, not wanting to wake them up, then went over and crouched down, studying them a second time, confirming my original impression. Though their coloration said they were Irish, but something about the tilt of the eyes spoke of a foreign parent. The girl opened her eyes, and looked at me, so I guess I wasn't as quiet as I thought I was. She nudged the boy into wakefulness. Two pairs of eyes stared at me; and I smiled.
“Thank you.” I said softly. “Is there anything I can do for you?”
“ah-” the girl started, and I heard their stomachs growl. It made me smile.
“Dinner then.”

My flat didn't have much of a kitchen in all honesty, but there wasn't much chance of getting anything decent to eat outside of someplace that wouldn't let them in in their grubby state; and I probably wouldn't have been able to afford anyway. But I could make eggs and toasted cheese, and from the way the twins ate; it had been a while since they'd had anything even that good. While we were eating I noticed that they both had odd-colored eyes. One green, one brown.
“My name is Alexander. What are your names?”
“Suki.”
“Saki.”
“Where are your parents.” They looked at each other, then Saki answered.
“We don't have any.”
I found this unlikely, given the quality of their clothes. I looked over a the stove, where I was heating water for a wash up. “Do you have anywhere to stay?” I coughed, and winced, but it hurt less than the coughs I'd had before.
Again they exchanged looks, and Suki touched her brother's hand.
“No.”
“Did something happen to you?”
They both stared at me, but didn't say anything. I smiled, and coughed again. Maybe talking about them wasn't the right tactic.
“I was in a lot of trouble last night; thank you. You probably saved my life.”
“Were you attacked by a vampire?” Saki asked, propping his chin on his hands.
I jerked, almost dropping my teacup. “Why would you think that?”
“We saw the bite marks when we put you to bed.” Suki offered. “We heard the vampires pass earlier that night.”
The side of my mouth twitched. “You believe in vampires then?”
They favored me with some of the oldest looks I'd ever seen.
“Alright; fine yes. You could say I was.”
“And you're a magician.”
“I guess you could say that.” I could tell that I was going to have to take the honest route with the twins. “To most people, I'm an actor, though.”
Saki took another piece of toasted bread, split it, and passed half to his sister.
“You two are very smart. Most people don't know about any stuff like this.”
Again, that terribly old look. Suki took the tea pot from the table, and refilled the cups. I looked at my pocket watch, and groaned. I would have to leave right away. I still smelled rather like I had spent the night- well, exactly how I had spent it. A clean shirt had helped but hadn't solved the problem. And there was still Saki and Suki to deal with. Somehow I got the feeling that they were running away from something. After the night before, I had no inclination to send them back to it.
“I have to go.” I said softly. Underneath the table, they grabbed each other's hands again. “You can stay if you'd like.” I offered.
“You'd trust us?” Saki asked.
“Yes. I'll be back in a few hours. No longer than I was asleep today.” I started wondering if they could talk in each other's heads; the looks that they exchanged were that speaking.
“Thank you, Mr. Alexander.” they chorused. I nodded, taking the time to run a warm cloth over my face. When I turned around, They had produced my outer things and were holding them ready. I smiled again, and locked the door behind me. They could get out from the inside, if they wanted to, and no one else would be able to get in.
