My Argument - Should fanfiction be illegal? |

Here I am, stuck in my bed because of a stupid fever, pulled away from school. I open my e-mail and what do I find? An e-mail from one of my faithful reviewer to do with fanfiction. Oh, joy! The e-mail gave me a link on what a person thinks about fanfiction. Well, here is my own personal response which, unfortunately, I didn't give to the one who created the argument. This is to my reviewer - she asked my opinion:
LINK: Fanfiction Argument
"Well, to be honest with you, I agree with both sides, but my opinion is rather different. To me, if you want to write fanfiction, at least choose one in which the original creator doesn't exist any longer - i.e, Sherlock Holmes. And yet, even though I say that, I myself write Detective Conan/Case Closed fanfiction and the creator, Aoyama Gosho, is still alive today. To choose one in which the author is already gone might be the best possible choice - the creator no longer can entertain his/her faithful readers and so, they'll still crave for more and shall turn to fanfiction. It's to keep their favourite characters alive in their minds, and really, probably to keep them going. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, as characters, play a considerably large role in my life and so, I have nothing against keeping them alive with the other Holmesian/Sherlockians.
If something is famous enough for someone to write a fanfiction about, it would be pretty obvious to any reader that the writing isn't their own piece of original fiction. True, of course, we do have some people from time to time who doesn't include disclaimers in their fics (me being one of them from time to time), yet, is it necessary? The credit will always go to the original creators of the canon and what the fanfiction writers gain from writing their fics are the fact on how well they know the characters, the setting. How well they can manipulate the characters into a story of their own - is that wrong? I don't think so.
In fact, an excellently-written fic will make people think. The fanfic-author will bond more with the characters, the readers will bond with both. Also, they don't get paid - heck, they're even anonymous for all we know, considering that these fics are published on the net. A group of anonymous people, trying to paint their characters alive from what they see fit.
It's like artists. To a believer, God created the lands. And we have famous artists like Picasso and Van Gogh - Picasso draws things in sections and Van Gogh's human eyes are always in different sizes - one being bigger than the other. Van Gogh sees people that way; he claims that their eyes aren't the same size - is he right? Yes. What's my point - fanfiction writers are the same.
Fanfiction is where the fanfic author manipulates the canon into what he or she sees. Art is where the artist manipulates what he or she sees in the lands created by God. Similar? - yes. Do the artists say that they create the drawings - yes. Does the fanfic writers say they create the story? - yes. Does the artists say that what they draw are their own creation, through and through? - No, because what they see originally comes to what God creates. Does the fanfiction writers say that what they write are theirs through and through? - No, because it's what they see in the original creator's piece of work."
So, do you have your own views? If so, drop a word if you'd like - I'd love to hear it. Rino-chan
