a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
“I don't have anything to make up beds for you.” I realized later. Both sets of odd colored eyes were suddenly young again, and frightened. It made my head hurt. My heart too; when I realized what it probably meant. I tried to make light of it. “You're dealing with a bachelor I'm afraid; young yet and on his own. I don't entertain much.”
“It doesn't look like you're here much.” Retorted Suki.
“If you were, you'd have more than just breakfast things.” Saki pointed out.
I smiled weakly. “You're right; I haven't been spending a lot of time here. I've been-”
“With the vampires.”
“Yes.” Their clarity was disconcerting. I looked away, and scratched my head, looking at my bed. “I suppose I could sleep on the floor.”
“You're sick.” was the immediate response.
“I suppose we could put something down the middle of the bed, and you could sleep on one side, and I could on the other.”
“You're not scary.” they said.
“Thank you, I guess.” I said, uncertain what they meant.

Apparently, that meant they trusted me. I woke up in the night with them on either side of me, their hands threaded together, clasped over my stomach. It was comfortable. I fell back to sleep.
