I picked a couple of books from a sci-fi series called the Polesotechnic League from a neighborhood book sale. They're by Poul Anderson. I'm through the first chapter of the first book: The Trouble Twisters. The main character is David Falkayn, the 17-year-old son of a baron of Hermes.
In the first chapter, David is an apprentice to a Master Merchant. He is sent as messeger to the local city on a distant planet when their ship crashlands. David needs a way to transport a new engine from the storage depot to the crashed ship 2,000 kilometers away. The problem is the native population refuses to let him use a wagon (aparently the hover cart from the ship is out of commision) because the wheel is sacred and cannot be used as a base tool. So David, the Master Merchant, and the rest of the crew have to deal with the "Conscecrates," or theocracy, inorder to get off the planet before they all starve (the food is poisonous, but the water is drinkable).
This book was copywritten in 1963, and has this goofy cover art featuring a scantily clad woman being chased by a man riding a beast and holding a sword. I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised so far, though. The story seems a lot deeper than the cover would lead you to believe.
