Many Graphic Designers can (and have been seen) as odd, quirky folks. Many people don't realize that a lot of what you see that's printed is done by some designer working away at their art desk.
There's a silly joke about how we designers would make a bag of tortilla chips that cost $1 turn into a three to four dollar bag at the market. That music CD you buy at any music store ? It's actually less than a buck to press that CD. Most of the cost comes from marketing and the production of the album jacket/CD art. The cost of printing a single U.S. dollar bill ? 60 cents.
Printed media is not the only venue ? No, it just doesn't stop there. Designing has extended into the realm of visual media as well. Unfortunately, our eyes are overwhelmed by a massive flooding of redundant graphics on the news. Tickers lining across the bottom of the screen-a good example of castrating creativity in the name of the corporate whip. It's things like this that make underground traditional artist cry out "sellout", but I have to ask-are you still working at the mall hoping your talents can become something ? I did something with myself, now it's your turn.
I've gotten interesting viewpoints from people who say "logo making isn't hard", yet the same folks wonder about how that logo came to be. For example, let's take this popular soda company..
Simple logo, but what does it mean you say ? Well, this is where the analytical part comes in. One would be quick to say, "It's a heatwave." Not really. Think of the blue part of the logo as a wave. That's pretty much what Pepsi is, a cool refreshing wave in a hot day. It's simply a different way of thinking.
If you ever met me (or my freelancing friends) in person, you'll see us looking at various typefaces and analyze the flow of an ad, what paper the piece is printed on, what print processes are used. Once in a while, you'll hear odd conversations. It can range from the graphic elements in the Anime "Bleach" to preparing a cookbook layout.
There's a method to everyone's madness. Just don't bogart mine okay ? scream
