The city came up quicker than it should have; less than a dozen steps took it from the horizon to my being in the outskirts. Now there seemed to be many roads, but there was only one I needed to follow. Each step I took brought me forward blocks and suddenly, I stood before a tower that stretched up to the sky above me. It blacked out the sky, except for the lighting that danced among the clouds. Though the thunder never stopped, I heard a laugh. Looking up, I saw Cedric, dressed like a king, standing on the top of the tower.
“So you've come.”
“Don't bother coming down.” I gathered my legs under me, and leaped towards him. I flew upwards, as one does in dreams and faced him. I still bore the wand and sword, and he appeared unarmed; but still my stomach twisted in fear.
“You can't hope to beat me.”
“There is always hope.” We came together in a great crashing of lighting, Cedric suddenly wielding a sword almost as large as he was in an impossible fashion. Again and again we met, sword to sword. And were thrown apart, leaving sparks in our path.
“You're pretty brave for a dying man.”
“As long as I can save them; it doesn't matter if I die.”
“You don't matter either way.” Lightning struck the tower- and whatever magic had held us up shattered wit the stones. A thousand black birds took flight as we came down, and I grabbed the front of Cedric's tunic, bearing him to the ground beneath me. The impact when we hit shocked blood from my lungs; the first indication of my sickness in the dream.
“I will. I will keep them from you.”
The blade of my sword at his throat, Cedric still laughed, and reached up, his hand closing around my throat.
“You think so? They're already mine.”
“No!” I drove forward, and blood spurted up onto my face as his thumb crushed into the hollow of my throat.
