Lacey sat breathlessly on the ground. She had almost forgotten how wonderful sunshine looked. Her home was gone. Only part of the stable was still standing. Heather was tethered to a near-by tree. Everything her parents had given her wa- Her Parents! Her eyes searched the mess in a panic.
"Mama! Papa! Where are you?"
She jumped up and spun around. She sank back to the dirt with a yelp of pain as she clutched her arm. The stranger smiled kindly at her. He was a young boy, not much older then Lacey. "Relax," He said. "If you try to do too much, you'll put yourself in worse shape. Your parents were taken to the hospital yesterday; They'll be fine."
Yesterday? How long was I asleep? Why didn't anyone look for me? Had they forgotten me?
The boy bandaged her up and walked with her to her horse. "You need to get out of here, Lacey. Those men who destroyed your house will be here soon. Now!" Heather started a rather fast trot, and Lacey called out " How do you know my name?", but she got no reply.
