A girl sits in the corner
She cries long and loud
Hoping someone will hear
Rage is in every corner of her body
She’s standing and screaming
“You don’t understand!”
People passing by laugh
They give her looks
And point
“You just don’t understand!”
She screams at an older woman
The woman shakes her head
And argues back with the girl
“Fine, be that way”
The women exclaims and walks off
Leaving the girl to slide back against the wall
And cry some more
Her shoulders shake
And she whispers over and over again
“You don’t understand”
Her fingers twist in a knot
Eyes closed
I can hear cry loudly
But even more loudly
And more distinct
I can hear her heart break inside her chest
Walking toward her, I see a knife peeking out of her pocket
She tightens her tiny hand around it
And brings it her arm
I run to her
And sit right down next to her
I take her hands in both of mine
She drops the knife
And looks in my eyes
“Will you let me understand?”
I cry
She nods
And at that moment
I begin to understand
