Before I could take any action, I had to turn my gut level feeling into something a bit more supported. IT was obvious that I would be getting no help from Henry, and as for the others, I hadn't really spoken with them since Edward's death. Or even, it came to me as I contemplated it, for months before that. We had drifted apart as a circle of mages; in fact, as far as I knew, I was the only one who still cast spells from time to time.
I suppose that when one has money, it is easier to use that to influence the world than magic; simpler in energy terms at least. So whatever it was I did, I would have to do myself.

But this time I didn't want the interference of the little urban spirits that had been plaguing me. Even if I chased them away, by the end of a scrying spell they would be back in force, so instead I had to craft a spell to keep them away. Besides, it would doubtless do my general mood a world of good. Thinking that he might have encountered something similar, I flipped through my uncle's grimore, and found a spell of protection from outside influences. It made me think of the spell I had stitched onto my handkerchief, and after a bit of searching, I found it, crumpled into a ball beneath my bed. That wasn't like me at all, and as soon as I'd shaken it out, I realized why- something had been influencing me for who knew how long; that was the reason that I had gone so long without thinking of magic; it was influencing me to forget it; forget that it worked, forget that I did it and forget that it even existed. I tied the handkerchief, dusty as it was, around my wrist and set out materials to cast the spell my uncle had outlined. It required a physical anchor, and I determined to use the chain on which I wore the silver key- it was a good quality silver as well, which would hold the spell nicely, and I liked the symmetry of it.
