I crafted the spell carefully, watching it form, shimmering and beautiful in the air before me. A good protection spell is something like a chain, each bit of the spell linking into the bit before, and by linking together like that, becoming something made out of nothing; most spells are a bit like that, but protection spells, because of their permanence are even more so. At last it was complete, except for the bit that would bind it to permanence, and to an object. It was difficult this way; when I had stitched the spell into the handkerchief, I had locked each section down with a stitch; but since I was sealing it into the chain and key, there was no way to do that, so I had to hold the entire spell in it's ephemeral form. Beads of sweat hung on the skin of my face, but I was too focused to wipe them away. I kept my breath as steady and even as I could; if I had a coughing fit now, the entire spell would shatter, and I would have to start over.
As I set it into the chain and key, I noticed that they had had spells set in them before. The spell that had been cast before was even of a similar type, which made setting it easier, for which I was grateful.

For an instant, as the spell adjusted to the home I had set for it, both chain and key glowed an erie silver-blue. Then the light faded, and when I picked it up, and ran the chain over my fingers like rosary beads, and to my mind, it felt just as comforting. It was stronger, and better made than the spell in the handkerchief. The metal seemed better suited to it, and I could feel the protection like a warm coat on a cold day.
