"No."
I turned towards him. His face as so close I could see each separate hair in his trim beard. He seemed shocked, and I took the opportunity to shove away, violently. Doing so caused me to crash down on an uneven rough surface, still hidden by fog. We had moved; and I wasn't even sure how; let alone where we were now. Shakily, I regained my feet, and re-spun my magical shields. The vampire laughed.
"Do you think me some sort of fairy that you can protect yourself from, Alexander?"
I didn't, but I didn't say anything, searching in my pockets for the object I needed to call another set spell to me, but my gloved fingers weren't finding anything. Desperately I hauled one glove off with my teeth and searched again, scrambling along the slightly sloped surface, any direction that was away from the vampire. Between one step and the next, the surface beneath my feet disappeared, and as I fell I realized where we had been- on a roof!
I had no idea how we 'd gotten there, and that was the least of my worries. Rich baritone laughter sounded, and my fall was arrested by a steady arm around my waist. This time with my eyes open, I saw the mist move, as he brought me upwards again. It didn't feel like I'd imagined flying must; it felt like nothing at all. Though I was a bit distracted at the time.
"You are such an adorable thing." He whispered in my ear. "I love spirits like yours. They always seem to want to hurt me though."
"I wonder why" I shot back, then stared in horror as my glove disappeared downward. I could feel him watching it too, over my shoulder. He chuckled again at my palpable dismay.
"Do remember not to struggle Alexander, I would hate to drop you." for half a second he loosened the grip he had around my waist, and reacting without thinking, I clutched backwards frantically. I knew it would make him laugh, as I did it, but couldn't help it. "Have you changed your mind?" he chuckled, taking a better hold of me.
"No." I growled, and tried to force my hands to let go of their grips.
His body was unexpectedly warm against me, and I shivered involuntarily.
"Are you going to start coughing again?" he asked in a very congenial tone. "It doesn't sound healthy."
"Oh Shut up." I muttered miserably. As long as we were in the air, there was nothing I could do. Any action that I took might well result in a debilitating or fatal plummet to the ground below.
For long moments we drifted. I tried to hold onto a sense of time or direction but both seemed far away. The vampire seemed content that I was his prisoner in this cold, misty world. Miserably, I wondered if this was what had happened to Edward after I had stopped watching. It occurred to me that he hadn't been found for three days after the night I 'witnessed' the vampire attacking him. Only then did I wonder what had happened during that time.
"Aren't you going to fight anymore?" my captor inquired. "There are only so many options you know; give in, give up, or keep fighting. You haven't given in, and you don't strike me as the time to give up."
"I also can't fly." I retorted. The hand that had lost it's glove was very chilled, and to my dismay still clenched around his coat sleeve.
"You haven't asked my name, I notice."
"If I guess it, will you let me go?"
"Oh, did you want that?"
For a heart paralyzing moment, he did.
