For a moment we were both still. Then he smiled slowly.
"You have a beautiful spirit. Give me your name."
"Why would I?"
"Give me your name." He insisted, capturing the hand that had struck him. He pressed it agaisnt his cheek where I'd struck him. It was a strangely tender gesture. But I wasn't fooled. At that moment he was in control of the situation completely.
"Alexander." I said, looking away from his face.
"Alexander" he smiled at me, I could hear it in his voice. He pushed the leather of my glove up at the wrist, and breush his lips along the joint. "Alexander the great. Protector of mankind. Or just perhaps a select few." He put a hand to my cheek and brought my face around to look at him. The vampire's eyes were strangely alive. "And what is it they call you? Al? Alex? Lex? Sandy?"
"You can call me Alexander." I frowned.
"Aw so cruel." he mocked. "Is there nothing I can do to win you to my side? A gift I can give you?" He leaned forward s our cheeks touched. "Magic perhaps? I know spells the like of which you've never heard. And life. I can give that, strong and lasting." I could tell that he wasn't lying. My eyes closed at his nearness, and I will admit it tempted me.

Once before I had been offered something from a creature that wasn't human. The Incubus, all silver hair and great dark eyes. For a moment in the darkness of my own world, I remembered the sadness there, and the smell of his hair.

Hot breath tickled my ear and I came back to myself. This was all the more dangerous. The incubus at least had asked for something in return, and offered in fact, very little. This vampire, who was holding me against him like I'd made the decision had offered me a great deal, and so far had asked for nothing but my name.

I took a deep breath, and reopened my eyes, seeing nothing but mist which closed in around us, isolating me from anything that was real, any grounding influence.
And I made my decision.
