Like the vampire, Edward was surprisingly warm. He smelled faintly of damp earth; not a bad smell but unexpected. We remained in the embrace for an unseemly amount of time. In the end I remembered the circumstances, and let go, drawing back to an arm's length.
“So you...” I started to say. Before I could finish my sentence, he pulled be towards him again and kissed me. It was plain at this point that as dear as I held him as a friend, the affection he felt for me was somewhat more. But it wasn't a bad kiss. Especially since I hadn't received many kisses at all of late that weren't part of a stage direction. As nice as it was, in the end, I pulled away again. “Do you live here now?”
Edward laughed.
“In so much as I live anywhere? No actually.”
“What are you doing here? What am I doing here?!”
“I think it's obvious that you're here because I brought you.” the vampire came up and put a hand on my shoulder and the other on Edward's. “Of course, if Edward had just gone to see you himself, things would have been much less complicated.”
“That's right-” I said, for a moment forgetting the absurdness of the situation .”if you were alive why didn't you say something.”
“Xander- I'm not alive.” Edward said. “You must know that. I am ...”
“A vampire.” I closed my eyes and turned away. My heart sank, and a cough bubbled up form my chest. Compared to some of the coughing fits I had, it was mild, but it obviously concerned Edward. He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me, almost seeming to will his strange warmth into me.
The other vampire, the one who had killed him, just watched, perched on a nearby gravestone.
“So you've come back form the dead, you're marauding the lower quarters. Why come get me? Why not your wife? Why not tell her?”
Edward shook his head, sighing.
“Xander, I did not love my wife. I love you.”
