Much later Edward broached a tender subject; the idea that I would join them in their vampiric life. Perhaps he thought if I had a chance to make a calm choice, I would simply make it.
“You don't understand, Edward; I've already made my choice. Nothing you're going to say is going to change that.”
“I don't want you to die.”
“A lot of people are saying that.”
“But you still choose to die?”
“A wise person once told me that all mortal things will die.” I turned my eyes to Vlad. “I think that means you too.”
“Very astute, this unnamed friend of yours.” Vlad smiled.
“He taught me more than he knew.” I relaxed into the bed, and closed my eyes.
“Aren't you worried we'll take the choice from you?” Vlad teased.
“No.” I turned on my side. “For now, I'm safe from you. You wouldn't hurt me.”
A hand touched my face, and I felt Edward curl around me.
“You're right. You don't know nearly enough yet.”
The statement should have scared me, but it didn't.
I fell asleep.
