Special little entry, same date and time as previous entry, except 12:26 AM EST.
I'm trying to understand why I play MMORPGs, and why I am attracted to them. Probably because of their main design element: A time sink.
Why am I thinking this while being a player of MMOs for nearly 3 and a half years?
Well, first off, my gaming personality. I look for adrenaline rushes in my games, which is why my library mainly consists of fast-paced hyper-gore shooters. I use games to receive stimuli that I cannot receive in the real world. But, when I want to use my brain, I have plenty of strategy games for that.
Second, commitment. The main idea behind the MMO is to keep players subscribed. I am not a completionist when it comes to games, nor do I care about side quests. I play games the way they are designed, as that provides the best experience. So, I naturally already have a linear play style. MMOs do not cater to that, as they are open worlds. So, my natural gaming sense of direction is FUBARed, which is a failure of that MMO hook to get me. This is one of the reasons why I finally left WoW, as I learned about the true nature of the MMO. Since I do not have this sense of direction that caters well to MMOs, I am bored easily by them. I do not see the main concept of fun in them. However, I did see it in Warhammer Online. The main design philosophy behind WAR is to have massive (and I mean massive) PvP battles, and eventually end in a city siege with pillaging and looting. I saw this when I was in the Closed Beta, and I bought the game based on that vision that the testers and the developers shared. In actual reality, the game is no where near this vision. However, this is the because of the typical "MMO at launch syndrome", meaning that nearly everything is broken and the nature sense of balance that an MMO has after being on the market for a while has. This lack of polish is common in new MMOs, and it has tainted the vision I saw in the Closed Beta. If I cancel WAR, I feel as thought I am being a hypocrite of myself, as I left WoW and went to WAR for more reasons than staying with WoW.
And third, people.
Why do I say people? This is why.
I have zero tolerance for asshattery.
WoW has shown me just how low human society can go.
Some may argue, "But it's just a game! Why don't you treat it as such as well?"
That is an ignorant point of view. The amount of compassion on the smallest things determines who they really are.
What that means that if someone treats a game like a pile of s**t - when they are playing with other real humans in the first place - what makes you think they won't treat life like a pile of s**t?
